Vancouver Island School of Art Newsletter

Dear Fans and Friends of VISA:

We have been offering an exciting and eclectic selection of summer workshops for the last seven years including topics as diverse such Fresco Painting, Plein Air, Printmaking, Encaustics, Felting, Abstract Painting, Historical Drawing, Gouache Painting, London School Figurative Painting, Beadweaving, Fabric Collage, Language of Mapping and many more. This summer (2012) is the last time we will be offering these weekday workshops, so if you have not had a summer workshop experience at VISA yet, I suggest you take some time and look at some of the things we have to offer.

In this week's newsletter you will see some of our upcoming offerings. We also have a Poster Workshop by internationally renown graphic designer, Andrew Lewis, Aug 6-10 and Plein Air with Jeremy Herndl, Aug 13-17; people really enjoy Jeremy's kind and considered approach to teaching. Our well-loved instructor, John Luna, who now teaches up in Mill Bay at Brentwood College has agreed to come down and teach two workshops this summer (Ambiguous Abstraction Aug 6,7,8, and History Painting Aug 13,14,15). If you haven't had course or workshop with John, I suggest you consider one of this painting workshops because it is an experience that will remain with you for a life time.  Val Nelson, an artist from Vancouver just had a wonderful exhibition at Galerie Bellefeuille in Montreal and is spending the most of the summer teaching in Italy will be coming to VISA, August 20-24 to teach a workshop called Painterly Realism. And last, but not least, Inga Romer is coming from Berlin, Germany especially to teach two workshops at the end of the summer: Painting Space Aug 21,22, 23 and Painting: Photographic Influence Aug 27,28,29. Inga brings a unique teaching style and wealth of information about contemporary European art to her workshops.

Starting in Summer 2013 we will be dedicating our classrooms for studio space in our Summer Residency program so no more workshops ): We have enjoyed offering these workshops and know that many of you have had great learning experiences. Our recommendation to those of you who haven't tried one, is to take advantage of the VISA summer workshop experience this summer as it will be your last opportunity to do so.

DRAWING: THE LANGUAGE OF MAPPING
July 23, 24, 25 (Mon - Wed)
10am - 5pm
Instructor: Wendy Welch

Maps are a visual representation of specific places. Early maps were made by artists who often had no hands-on experience with the location depicted in the map; they were made through the testimonials of others and the imagination of the artists. This workshop uses the language of map making to explore other terrains such as the imagination, memory and space. Workshop is comprised of hands-on exercises, critiques and visual presentations of artists doing related work. Artists discussed include: Franz Aackermann, Mark Mander and Matthew Ritchie.

Tuition: $250.00 (includes 18 hours of instruction and two optional studio days, Thursday & Friday )
Material Fee: $15 for paper
PAINTING WITH XANE

July 23-27 Mon - Fri, 10am - 5pm
(Residency no credit hours)
Fee: $175.00 (per week)

For the last two weeks of July, Xane St Phillip will be offering an open painting studio session from Monday-Friday, 10-5pm. These sessions will be a combination of painting in class, individual consultations and group critiques. You can bring in work in progress or new work you would like to start. Xane will be on hand to facilitate your painting process, whether it be advice on colour or design or suggestions on what direction to take with your work. This is a fantastic opportunity to have an intense focus on your work under the mentorship of Xane and working with a group of like-minded colleagues.
Please note that Xane will be on-site from 2:00-4:00 pm daily.  This will allow you time to paint up to the early afternoon and then join in individual or group critique sessions.
