Senior Holistic Living
Greetings!

A new year presents the perfect opportunity for giving thanks.  Resolutions and new beginnings abound, and we're often inspired to breathe new life into renewed commitments.  Quite simply, it's easier to remember all of the reasons to be thankful during this time of year, and that's good news for our health and wellbeing.

"Grateful People are Happier, Healthier Long After the Leftovers Are Gobbled Up" the headline read in a recent Wall Street Journal article.  According to the article, giving thanks is good for your physical and mental health.  Read on to find out how to manifest the power of gratitude in your own life.

Don't forget to tune into The Caregiver Hour radio show on Mondays from 11am to 12pm.  Listen live, and phone in your questions to 877-897-8255.

The Power of Gratitude
Giving thanks has benefits

Scientific evidence shows that those who feel grateful have more energy, earn more money and sleep better. Here are a few tips on how to practice an attitude of gratitude:

Keep a gratitude journal

A gratitude journal is a way to consciously call attention to the things for which we are thankful each day. By focusing on gratitude, we become aware of those things and thus create a shift in our thinking to the positive. Choose a blank journal or notebook, and begin looking everyday for the positive angle in all things.  Write it down, and revisit your words frequently.

Pause mindfully throughout the day

Take the time to leave the fast-paced, hectic swirl of the daily grind by simply pausing, momentarily, to reconnect with your body and breath. Being mindful is not difficult to do, it is just difficult to remember to do.

Be kind to yourself and others

Stress-related problems tend to improve after performing kind acts, and self-esteem is enhanced along with feelings of optimism and happiness. These benefits extend beyond only doing for others; you can experience them when doing something nice for yourself as well. Buy someone flowers.  Take a long relaxing walk. Reach out to an old friend. Get a massage!
