Senior Holistic Living
Greetings!

I was recently reminded by the words of this song that sometimes we get so caught up in doing and running around that we forget to just be:

Life is a challenge not a competition
You can still smell the roses and be on a mission
Just take a moment to get in touch with your heart
Sometimes you feel like you've got something to prove
Remind yourself that there's only one you
Just take a moment to give thanks of who you are
   Early in the morning
It's the dawn of a new day
New hopes, new dreams, new ways
I open up my eyes and
I open up my mind and
I wonder how life will surprise me today

This month, my commitment to myself is to take 10 minutes a day to just be.  Will you join me?

Don't forget to tune into The Caregiver Hour radio show on Mondays from 11am to 12pm.  Listen live, and phone in your questions to 877-897-8255.

The Beauty of a Staycation
How to get away without going anywhere

At home getaways
Fall is underway, and many families are still delighting in memories of summer vacation while excitedly looking forward to another getaway over the holidays.

But for caregivers, leaving home for a vacation isn't always practical. If you can identify, you're the perfect candidate for a "staycation."

Originally coined for people trying to save money by unraveling the mysteries of the world from the comfort of their living room couches, staycations have evolved to include those who don't want to or can't leave home for a variety of reasons - including caregiving responsibilities.

Here are a few ideas to help jumpstart your imagination while planning your own staycation:

  • Hire a cleaning services to tidy up the house.  Who said maid service is only for hotels?
  • Schedule an in home 90-minute massage.  Close your eyes, and imagine that you're at a posh spa.
  • Turn the ringer off.  Pretend that you're getting bad reception in an exotic locale. Very realistic.
  • Order roomservice. OK, it's really delivery pizza or Chinese, but it will be just as sweet if you don't have to cook.

Need more ideas? Have a question about how you can turn your staycation dreams into a reality? Ask Kim

Senior Living Guide's 500 Lap Relay

When you are 96 years old and have Alzheimer's, the days can be long for you and for your caregivers. Boredom and depression can be part of the daily routine, but not for "Mary" anymore.

Mary's health care provider, knowing that she knit years ago, suggested that she try knitting for Senior Living Guide's 500 Lap Relay, a service project to provide 500 handmade lap blankets to seniors in wheelchairs.
