Getting The Most Efficiency from Your Air Conditioner

There is some misunderstanding about SEER - Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating and the fact that the higher the SEER the more energy efficient the unit is.   While that statement is true, there is more to SEER
than researching on line and choosing the highest available SEER AC
Unit available.

In order to get the most efficiency from your air conditioner, other
factors are involved.  And BIGGER is not always BETTER.  To determine
the correct size unit for your home the house should be tested for
leakage and a load calculation (Manual J) should be prepared for you.
Without this information - you are guessing at the size you will need.
Incorrect sizing will not provide the desired indoor air comfort nor
will it reap the savings you anticipate.

Selecting the correct size AC Unit is based on more than the Square
Footage of your home.  To ensure your unit is working as it should,
another alternative would be a standard load calculation, including
house exposure (north, south, east, etc...), type of roof, the
insulation of the roof and walls, as well as the number of windows and
their sizes.

Matching the correct size unit to your Home means your unit isn't over
working or under working, rather it is working, as it should.  When
your unit is not working the way it should, or losing air through
leakage, even a high SEER unit will not run at is peak efficiency.
Wasting your cool air not only increases your power bill, it reduces
the efficiency of your air conditioner.

Your duct system can play as big of a role in your system efficiency
as the unit itself.  Leaky ducts not only allow conditioned air to
leak into attics or crawlspaces, making your unit run longer, but they
can also cause hot, humid, unfiltered air to be pulled into your home.
Undersized ducts can also decrease system efficiency and capacity by
not allowing the system to move the proper amount of air across the
coil.  Undersized ducts can also decrease airflow to some parts of
your home, usually in the rooms located the furthest from the air
handler, making these rooms uncomfortable and causing you to turn your thermostat to a lower temperature to overcome airflow issues.

If you are not getting the most out of your Air Conditioner, or are
unhappy with your electric bills, talk to your Bay Area Service
Technician about options and solutions.

It's Not the Heat, It's the Humidity

Why is Florida so Humid?Lady_in_front_of_Fan

There is no single, simple answer.  Here are at least eight reasons, most of which are interrelated....

  1. Most of Florida is a peninsula which, by definition is bordered by water on three sides.  The adjacent sea water is the most important source of moisture for the atmosphere...
  2. Sea breeze convergence carries moisture over the land....
  3. Florida is located along the eastern margin of the continent where warm waters arrive - warm waters mean higher evaporation rates...
