Welcome to Moms Against Poverty - MAP
Summer is in full bloom and the images of hope live in the bright, vibrant summer days and golden afternoons. We have so much wonderful news and updates to share with you, from the opening of HOPE Children's Home in Cambodia and the news of our upcoming fundraiser in San Francisco CA.
None of this work would be possible without you and our community. MAP is a community of like minded individuals, such as yourself, who believe we can make a difference in this world and that we can change generations by helping just one child. Together we can help many children have brighter futures and better opportunities.
We ask that you help us build this community by joining our new FACE BOOK Page and inviting all your friends and family to join our movement today.
On behalf of the children thank you,
MAP Board Members

MAP in Cambodia
We are proud to announce the opening of Hope Children's Home
Hope CH in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is a 24hr home for orphans and underprivileged children who would otherwise suffer physical, mental and emotional trauma due to living in extreme poverty or unsuitable home environment. We are grateful to our partners Sam and Ann Pehlke from Chibodia whose invaluable assistance made the opening of this home possible. This home will be directed, managed and operated by Timon Seibel, Somphors Un and Sophea Phal. In addition, MAP continues to support the children of Aziza's Place (AP) in Phnom Penh. We purchased three new desktop computers to provide the proper resources for the computer education program at AP. The AP residents all learn the essential skills of computer studies, each attending four classes per week, taught by a Khmer Computer Teacher. The opportunity to develop skills in Computer Studies is advantageous for the AP residents, as they build up their skill-sets for future job opportunities.
In addition we supported nine AP students to take part in a training course at the 'Attitude Center for Education' (ACE) - a local organization focused on 'equipping young people with the leadership skills and the confidence to bring about positive change in Cambodia. This program teaches these children how to become effective role models in their communities. |

MAP in Afghanistan

Rokhshana School students are back to school as of February 2011 and MAP continues to support their educational programs.
Approximately 1,100 students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade have been enrolled in computer education classes developing their computer skills as a key for their future college and job advancement. 23 teachers, the school's Administrator, and other staff also received computer training during the winter program in order to improve their technical and computer application skills for their work.
500 students (6th through 9th graders) are enrolled in Bilingual studies and used bilingual storybooks to enhance their reading skills.
125 students have been enrolled in the Environmental Education Program, learning about the dangers of polluted air, water, toxic waste, and vanishing wildlife.
125 students are enrolled in the Peace Education Program, learning to cope with trauma associated with observing or experiencing any form of violence. These students learn positive, peaceful behavior and non-violent conflict resolution skills. Several orientation and teacher-parent meetings have taken place to help parents better understand what their children are learning and to reinforce peace education principles in the home. The program also teaches parent to allow their children to express their emotions and opinions at home- as this is (historically) a challenging cultural norm to overcome in most Afghan households. |

MAP in the U.S.
In addition to our continuous food deliveries and support of students at Sugarland Elementary School who live below the US national poverty line, MAP is involved in various projects in the US.
MAP is supporting 230 teens (aged 15 to 18) to receive training through the "Teen Advocacy Program". This program helps teens that have lived in the foster care system most of their lives make a successful transition to college or a job training program and independent living.
In addition we are supporting 25 teen moms from California's Tri-Valley Area (Dublin, Livermore, and Pleasanton) by providing them with the tools and training they need to complete high school , attend college and support their children.
Finally we are supporting 20 disadvantaged children in Pleasanton, CA to attend a summer preschool program. This program is aimed at giving them various learning tools and skills to help them have the same skill level as others in their grade and to thrive in the coming school year. |
