Welcome to Moms Against Poverty - MAP

Autumn is the season for harvest and celebration, a time to rejoice and reflect on our accomplishments, and reap what we have sown in the months and years before.

2010 has been a wonderful year of growth and creation for MAP. Over $80,000 was spent on maintaining, improving and expanding our various projects in the USA, Cambodia and Afghanistan.

In 2010 we launched our first fundraiser in the Washington DC area with great success.  MAP's marketing and sales efforts have been focused around expanding MAP's visibility and obtaining Corporate Grants.  Additionally, we have been working with the US State Department to obtain OFAC licensing to expand our reach into Iran.

MAP volunteers are busy kicking off this season with our largest ever Fundraising Event on October 2 in San Francisco, CA.  We are pleased to announce that Max Amini, a celebrated actor and comedian, will be our Master of Ceremony for this event. For additional information please visit our website.

MAP is a 100% volunteer based organization and currently 90% of MAP's funds come from private donors such as you. On behalf of the children, we thank you for your generosity and open heart.  We cannot do this work without your help.

MAP in the USA

Food Bryant Center
MAP invests in nurturing children in the USA.  Over 13 million children in the United States live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level and 39% of children live in low-income families.  In addition there is over half a million children in the foster care program needing safe and loving homes.

Nourishment is a basic human right and one of the key elements in a child's physical, mental and emotional development and it is an essential means to eliminating poverty.

MAP has spent approximately $20,000 in 2010 on providing food to children in Bryant Center, SF and Sugarland Elementary School, VA, two schools supported by MAP.

In addition, $5,000 was spent to continue support of Child's Advocate Early Childhood Program, supporting children in the foster care system.
MAP in CambodiaAziza boys dorm

Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, has 564 slum areas which houses 300,000 people, one quarter of the city's population.  These children live in a severe toxic environment lacking basic needs such as food, shelter, heath care and education.

MAP supports a school, safe house and free health clinic fostering the children in these communities.  Over $22,000 was spent to maintain and expand our projects in Cambodia.  The funds were used to build a boy's dormitory at Aziza Place, repair the roof from leaking and to support the education and health program at this center.
In addition, funds were used to support the operation and expansion of Motomedix free health clinic located in the slums outside of the capital.  We are proud to say that we have expanded our Motomedix facilities to two new locations and we now have three free health clinics in operation.
MAP in AfghanistanRokshana Literacy Class Room

Afghanistan is one of the world's poorest countries, having endured decades of war. The literacy rate in Afghanistan is one of the lowest among developing countries and female literacy is the lowest in the world.

MAP spent $29,000 to support and expand the literacy program, computer education program, peace education program, and teacher training programs at Rokhshana Girls School. Rokhshana reported their 2010 Enrollment to be 4,743 students (all girls; grades 4-12). The literacy program is one of the most effective programs at this school and offers the opportunity for these girls to become bilingual. The literacy program along with the computer education program provides these girls with employable skills.

Currently, 10th graders are taught Windows and Word, 11th graders learn Power Point, and 12th graders are trained in Excel and its applications.  Upon graduation, these girls have learned to use the internet and they can search and exchange information worldwide. We are pleased to report that many of these students are recruited and eventually employed by various companies and organizations doing business in Kabul.

AHA Fundraiser

MAP Volunteers planned and hosted an event for the nonprofit organization AHA.  AHA had a fixed budget for their event and offered to donate the remainder of their cost to MAP.  As a result, $12,000 was donated to MAP.  Although event management is not a primary focus area for MAP, we do welcome the opportunity to work with other charitable organizations in helping to assist facilitate their events, provided portion of their profits is donated to MAP.  Please contact us if you would like to learn more about this service.
