AHA eNews

Asperger Syndrome & High Functioning Autism Association (AHA) Inc.

JANUARY 3, 2012

Greetings!

AHA wishes you good cheer in the New Year.

The AHA eNews begins with activities and services at Spectrum Services in NYC and a smattering of other events in store. We will send out articles, research and activities in the tri-state area as we receive them.

Our annual spring conference: Issues in Independent Living for Adolescents and Adults on the Autism Spectrum will be posted this week.  The conference takes place at Adelphi University, Saturday, April 21, 2012. Always a big sellout! The brochures will be in the mail early February but you will be able to sign-up online before.

Look for news here of an event on Long Island (hint, hint - think of family fun plus one wheel) on Saturday, Feb 5th. To be announced this week. The event will be limited to under 50 people (all ages) so sign up as soon as it is posted.  We promise a fun afternoon!

The AHA eNews goes to over 3200 individual emails in New York State, all over the United States and internationally. Some of you are members of AHA and pay yearly dues. Most of you are not and receive this service free of charge. Membership in AHA or donations can be made to help continue our list, our free support groups and hotline, and all the work we do throughout the year.

Membership brings you our outstanding newsletter, On The Spectrum, and discounts at our conferences.

If you would like to contribute please do so with a click here on our secure site for a donation to help us continue this list and the many other activities we do on behalf of individuals and family members. No amount is to small (or too big). AHA is a not-for-profit, 501 (c) (3) tax deductible organization.

Many thanks from all of us and a very healthy and happy New Year to you and your families.

So many college students with Asperger Syndrome find college an unexpected struggle. Yet the organizational and social demands are seldom addressed by typical disability service offices. If you would like to learn how to do executive function coaching for these students and help support their academic and social functioning, this minicourse will provide you all the necessary tools.

Asperger-Specific Neuropsychological Evaluation
Spectrum Services, NYC
Asperger-Specific Neuropsychological Evaluation is available at Spectrum Services. So many neuropsychological evaluations provide neither an understandable report nor any useful recommendations for assisting children, adolescents, and college students on the autism spectrum with school and life. Our neuropsychological assessments clearly describe for families, teachers, and the individuals themselves specific strategies that can really help problems with disorganization, emotional dysregulation, time management and prioritization.

To truly understand and communicate what is helpful for those with Asperger Syndrome, a specialization in the condition is necessary in addition to neuropsychological expertise. For more information, please see our article, "Smart Isn't Everything: the Importance of Neuropsychological Evaluation for Students and Individuals on the Autism Spectrum" at www.aspergercenter.com/articles.html

IMPROV
Spectrum Service, NYC

Improvisation can be an important skill building activity that helps support the development and practice of perspective taking, social spontaneity, and appreciation of social cues.   A class on improvisation for adults, with a focus on social skill enhancement, is now being offered.

AEIR AP for Autism
Developed by a Dad

This field is hopping and certainly ripe for all the engineers and computer geeks that are already involved. A story follows about one dad who has made a difference.

The application essentially allows children to create simple sentences by selecting from a row of virtual flashcards that represent nouns and verbs.

What makes the app unique is that it allows parents to customize the flashcards, uploading their own photos, typing in their own text and recording their own voices. That allows the flashcards to be personalized for the child.
