The holidays are a time full of buying gifts, taking vacations, attending parties, eating out, and various other things that take us away from our homes. Many of us share our daily lives with friends and family on social networks like Facebook, but more and more often wrongdoers are using information gathered from social media sites to plan robberies. Allstate Insurance Company has published a set of guidelines to help insureds decrease risk of theft due to sharing too much information this holiday season.
Many of the tips are common sense and have applied to holiday travel for ages, including leaving a few lights on in your house and stopping newspaper delivery while on vacation, but some, like turning off location tracking on mobile apps, may not be so obvious. Allstate recommends that insureds wait until they get home to post vacation pictures and avoid gushing about expensive gifts on sites like Facebook and Twitter. Insureds who use geolocation sites like Foursquare or Gowalla, should wait until they're leaving to "check into" a restaurant or shop.
As social media becomes a bigger part of our daily lives, its importance in the insurance industry grows as well. It can be used across functions from assessing risk to adjusting claims and can even be a risk in and of itself.
