Greetings!
Happy End of Summer! Are you or your organization looking for ways to attract more attention and excitement for this November's election? With National Voter Registration Day exactly one week away, and less than 50 days to go until Election Day, we wanted to let you know about a QUICK and EASY opportunity for you to get your hands on some FREE voting swag for the upcoming election, including this great Election Day poster from Nonprofit Vote!
In order to take advantage of this opportunity, all we're asking is that you sign on to CalNonprofit's Vote With Your Mission Campaign at www.votewithyourmission.org. Signing on to the campaign is simple and only takes a few seconds. The campaign asks that your organization pledge to undertake any two of six action items listed on its webpage, including asking all staff, board members, volunteers, and constituents to vote or providing nonpartisan voter registration materials on site. It's really that simple! Plus, if you are as energized by this campaign as we are, your organization can also sign up as a co-sponsor by agreeing to reach out to 15 other nonprofits and asking them to join the campaign.
- IMPORTANT - In order to get in on the free swag, make sure that after you've signed on to the campaign, you send Lawrence an email at lawrence@caparticipates.org. After we've confirmed your confirmation, we'll send you a free Election Day poster for your organization, in addition to some complementary buttons and stickers that you can give out to your staff or volunteers. Don't miss out on this opportunity to get some free resources for your organization today! |
| Celebrate National Voter Registration Day! | |
The California Participation Project has been working for the past couple months with a broad network of civic engagement partners to coordinate activities for the first-ever National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) on September 25, 2012!
In 2008, 6 million Americans didn't vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn't know how to register. With over 2 million eligible, unregistered citizens in L.A. County and countless others who need to re-register because they moved or changed their name, let's make sure that no one is left out!
NVRD kicks off the final month leading up to California's voter registration deadline (October 22). To find out more information about NVRD, or other ways that you or your group can be involved with voter registration and in getting out the vote, please contact Lawrence Joe at lawrence@caparticipates.org.
Visit www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org to search for NVRD events taking place near you!

Educating Voters About Candidates
Monday, September 24th, 2012 2:00p.m. - 3:00p.m. Pacific Click here to register
Please join us for this webinar in which we will discuss legal and practical tips for educating voters during election season. Candidate debates or forums are a great way for 501(c)(3) organizations to help the public figure out what candidates think and what they plan to do if elected. Alliance for Justice will explain the legal guidelines for conducting voter education activities in a 501(c)(3)-compliant way. Groups that have organized candidate forums will discuss the planning process and what they wish they knew before they started. Cara Underwood of Southern California Grantmakers will talk about SCG's partnership with other Los Angeles organizations to put on a Los Angeles mayoral candidate forum in February 2012. Danielle Brazell from Arts for LA will also talk about her organization's past work on setting up a candidate forum in Long Beach, and plans for upcoming voter education this fall.

| Support Election Reform! | | |
The following three voter participation bills are currently awaiting the Governor's signature. Please take a moment to send a letter of support urging the Governor to make democracy available to everyone in the state of California!
AB 1436 (Election Day Voter Registration): will allow citizens to register to vote up to and on Election Day. Sample letter of support.
SB 35 (National Voter Registration Act): would empower the Secretary of State to enforce the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), expand the number of state agencies that must comply with NVRA, and establish protocols for streamlining online voter registration. Sample letter of support.
SB 1233 (Ballot Measure Petitions: Translations): would require official ballot initiative titles and summaries to be attached and made available in languages covered by the Federal Voting Rights Act when circulating a petition. Click the here to urge Governor Brown to sign this bill.
