Greetings!
We're 119 days from Election Day - November 6, 2012 - and there is so much that we have to do. With 11 ballot measures qualifying for the Fall election, California voters will be faced with a number of issues, ranging from two competing tax measures designed to raise revenue for the state, a hotly-contested battle over the use of automatic payroll deductions for political purposes, and revisions to the penal code, including increasing criminal penalties for human trafficking, repealing the death penalty, and a revision to the Three Strikes law which would impose life sentences only when the new felony conviction is serious or violent. The outcomes of many of these ballot measures will have a major impact in the work that we do. As we look towards November, it's important that we do everything that we can to get out the vote. This past June, only 21.87% of registered voters in Los Angeles County went to the polls. Not only that, the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office reported that there are still over 2 million eligible, unregistered voters throughout the county itself! For a region as racially and economically diverse as L.A., we can do better. That is why we are proud to support National Voter Registration Day, a nationwide effort to "hit the streets" on Tuesday, September 25, to register as many voters as we can in a single, coordinated effort to reach tens of thousands of voters throughout the country. We hope that you will join us in these efforts by taking advantage of the opportunities below to learn more about how you can get involved, and to sign up to do your part at www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org. |

| Same-Day Election Day Registration | |
The June Primary for California had one of the lowest voter turnouts in our state's history -- only 23% of eligible voters turned out. In an effort to increase voter participation, please sign the Courage Campaign's petition in support of Election Day Registration (EDR) -- AB 1436 -- which will allow eligible citizens in California to register to vote up to and on Election Day. By passing EDR, we could increase turnout by 5%, or by 850,000 more voters!
Currently, Californians can only register up until two weeks before an election. Those last two weeks before an election are the time when most people begin to get excited about the election -- it's when the most ads are run and campaigns are doing all they can to reach voters. So why not make sure all these potential voters can still participate? It's already passed through the Assembly, so we want to be ready to show the Senate that Election Day Registration needs to pass.
Will you sign our petition in support of Election Day Registration now? For only 30 seconds of your time, this could allow 5% or 850,000 more eligible voters in California to register and vote in the next election. That's enough voters to swing an election for Governor or a critical ballot measure, where the margin of victory is often 1-3% points. We want to enfranchise and give access to as many eligible voters as possible, and involve more people in our political process.
Thank you for all that you do.
