| June 5th California Primary Election! |
June 2012
| |
Greetings!
Tomorrow, June 5th, is the California Presidential Primary Election and the day to get out and VOTE WITH YOUR MISSION! We want 100% of our eligible staff and volunteers to vote tomorrow - and to vote with the values that brought us to nonprofit work.
If you haven't decided who to vote for or how to vote on the ballot initiatives, we've provided a few useful links below to help you.
Election Day Voting Links: - Find your polling place to make sure your voting location hasn't changed! Visit the California Secretary of State's website here and click on the link for your county elections office to find your assigned polling location.
- Check the status of your voter registration, including whether you are registered to vote at your current address by visiting the following link. If you recently moved and forgot to re-register to vote, you are allowed to vote at the polling place for your new address by casting a a provisional ballot.
- If you haven't mailed in your vote-by-mail/absentee ballot, you may also return it in person to any precinct polling place in your county or to your county election office by 8pm tomorrow. If you've already mailed in your ballot, you can check to see if your ballot was received by visiting the following link.
Voter Information: - The link to the Secretary of State's Official California Voter Information Guide includes information pertaining to candidates running for President and the U.S. Senate, as well as two statewide ballot initiatives - Proposition 28 and Proposition 29.
- SmartVoter is an online guide produced by the League of Women Voters of California that provides comprehensive ballot information for all elections in most California counties. After you type in your address, the guide will provide a personalized list of all the candidates and contests that will appear on your ballot.
- MapLight's Voter Guide provides comprehensive, nonpartisan information about Propositions 28 and 29, including up-to-date information about top campaign contributors, news articles, editorials, endorsements, and campaign ads.
- For information about the judicial candidates for Los Angeles Superior Court, the Los Angeles County Bar Association has posted candidate ratings for each of the judicial candidates seeking election. They also have links to the L.A. Times' Judicial Endorsements.

| Voter Bill of Rights | | - You have the right to cast a ballot if you are a valid registered voter. A valid registered voter means a United States citizen who is a resident in this state, who is at least 18 years of age and not in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony, and who is registered to vote at his or her current residence address.
- You have the right to cast a provisional ballot if your name is not listed on the voting rolls.
- You have the right to cast a ballot if you are present and in line at the polling place prior to the close of the polls.
- You have the right to cast a secret ballot free from intimidation.
- You have the right to receive a new ballot if, prior to casting your ballot, you believe you made a mistake. If, at any time before you finally cast your ballot, you feel you have made a mistake, you have the right to exchange the spoiled ballot for a new ballot. Vote-by-mail voters may also request and receive a new ballot if they return their spoiled ballot to an elections official prior to the closing of the polls on Election Day.
- You have the right to receive assistance in casting your ballot, if you are unable to vote without assistance.
- You have the right to return a completed vote-by-mail ballot to any precinct in the county.
- You have the right to election materials in another language, if there are sufficient residents in your precinct to warrant production.
- You have the right to ask questions about election procedures and to observe the elections process. You have the right to ask questions of the precinct board and elections officials regarding election procedures and to receive an answer or be directed to the appropriate official for an answer. However, if persistent questioning disrupts the execution of their duties, the board or election officials may discontinue responding to questions.
- You have the right to report any illegal or fraudulent activity to a local elections official or to the Secretary of State's Office.
If you believe you have been denied any of these rights, or if you are aware of any elections fraud or misconduct, please call the Secretary of State's confidential toll-free Voter Hotline at 1-800-345-VOTE [8683].

The next webinar from our national partner Nonprofit VOTE is a week from Thursday, on June 14th at 11:00am Pacific.
Ready, Set, Register: Nonprofit Voter Registration
Thursday, June 14th at 11:00am Pacific
Registering to vote is the first step to becoming an active and engaged voter. In 2008, nine out of ten registered voters cast a ballot; among those who did not vote, many noted that they encountered problems with their registration. Join us for more on how your nonprofit can ensure that your clients and constituents are registered to vote and able to participate in this year's election! We'll help you create a voter registration plan, develop strategies and tactics for registering community members, ensure you remain nonpartisan, and more. Click here to RSVP today!
Upcoming webinars:
June 28th: What Nonprofit Staff Can Do: Voter Engagement at Work and Off the Clock
July 12th: National Voter Registration Day: How to Get Involved
Also, if you've missed any of Nonprofit VOTE's previous webinars, you can view any of their past webinars here.
Workshops last approximately one hour. You will need high-speed internet access to participate in these web workshops.
