MEET our new Director
|
May 2012
| |
Greetings!
As California gets ready for its first ever "top two" Primary Election on June 5th, we are excited to introduce Lawrence Joe, the California Participation Project's new Project Director. A graduate of UCLA Law School, Lawrence has worked with a number of nonprofit organizations in the area of civic engagement, including several of our local and national partners, including the Lawyer's Committee, the Asian Pacific American Legal Center and Mass VOTE. Most recently he was an Outreach Specialist for the the L.A. City Council Redistricting Commission.Come meet Lawrence on May 30th at 8:30am for coffee and bagels here at the California Endowment, then join us from 9:30-11:30am for a free training from fundraising expert Kim Klein on Nonprofits Talking Taxes and learn positive ways to talk about the California Budget Crisis and what can be done about it. Let us know by email if you can come. With at least two revenue measures heading for the November ballot, we think this is an excellent training for nonprofits to really understand what's at stake.
Please welcome Lawrence by dropping him an email over the next few weeks. Lawrence will also be reaching out to many of you to learn about how we can help you increase participation in your communities.

VOTE JUNE 5!
| | |
With new districts and the new top-two primary system, we are seeing some highly competitive races and come November we may see two Republicans or two Democrats running against each other.
Also on the ballot are two statewide measures with strong feelings on both sides:
Proposition 28 would change state term limits, reducing from 14 to 12, the total number of years combined that someone can be in office, but allowing someone to serve up to six two-year terms in the State Assembly or three four-year terms in the State Senate or a combination of time in either house.
Proposition 29 would raise taxes on tobacco with new revenues going for cancer research.
For more information on the candidates, the propositions and local measures, you can download the League of Women Voters' Easy Voter Guide or visit the California Secretary of State's website where you can also check out the status of ballot measures for November.

Vote With Your Mission
| | CPP is a co-sponsor of Vote with Your Mission, a new campaign by CalNonprofits to have 100% of eligible nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteers vote. And we hope all nonprofits will sign on. It's not a big commitment, but it could make a big difference! Eighty nonprofits have already signed up. For more information and to sign up, click here and download the flyer and pass it around at meetings.
