Tales from the Plant
April 2010

Greetings!BioFarm

Welcome to our April membership newsletter! Spring has officially sprung and with it, we're launching into the growing season with renewed ambition.

Our Design-Build department recently put the finishing touches on a new biodiesel production plant in Star, North Carolina. The North Carolina Biofuels Center tapped us for our expertise in esterification and trap grease applications. Lastly, our Partners in Sustainability program is primed and growing in an effort to better benefit all of our partners.

Be on the lookout for members of the Piedmont team at one of our many upcoming events, including three separate Earth Day events (@ UNCG, NC Central and Centenniel Campus Middle School) on April 22nd and at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival (where we'll be running biodiesel-fueled shuttles!!) April 23-25th. Also, keep in mind that we run free, public tours of our plant every Sunday at 1pm sharp. Come and see us now that the weather is beautiful and CFSA Farmer of the Year Doug Jones' BioFarm in in full bloom!

Thank you to all of our members who continue to support our efforts to bring clean, renewable fuel to Central North Carolina. Now that healthcare reform is off of Congress' plate, maybe we can move that lapsed biodiesel tax incentive along? We would be forever grateful if you'd put a bug in the ears of your local, state and federally elected representatives. Your efforts are needed in order to keep our operation, let alone our industry, alive and well. Spring into action!!

Sustainably yours,
Piedmont Biofuels
STARworks Biofuels Complete!!!

StarWorks

North Carolina's Newest Biodiesel Producer! STARworks Biofuels in Star, North Carolina completed training at their new facility in Mid-March. Piedmont Biofuels constructed the biodiesel processing equipment and conducted the training, while STARworks co-tenant at the former Fruit of the Loom Mill, Wet Dog Glass, assisted with fabrication of the catwalks and a waste heat recovery system that heats the biodiesel process with heat recovered from the exhaust stacks of the glass furnaces. AWESOME!

The facility was funded by the Biofuels StarWorksCenter of North Carolina to create lasting jobs in the field of renewable energy. Located in the former mill town of Star, NC, STARworks Biofuels is bringing North Carolina one step closer to the NCBF goal of replacing 10% of the states liquid petroleum fuels with clean burning biofuels. Tony Inskeep, plant operator at STARworks Biofuels, is now collecting vegetable oil in Montgomery and adjoining counties. if you are interested in their waste restaurant fryer oil collection services. Contact: tony@starworksnc.org

The STARworks processing system incorporates a 500-gallon batch processor utilizing hydrodynamic cavitation mixing technology for improved reaction efficiency. The facility is equipped for methanol recovery and utilizes ion exchange resins to reduce water usage.

Partners in Sustainability Update

Piedmont's Partners in Sustainability program is our way of thanking the restaurants and kitchens that support us. We want to highlight the collaborative efforts we all make demonstrating a more sustainable future for North Carolina.

We are currently growing our Partners in Sustainability program so that it may better serve and distinguish our fellow partners. This program provides each partner with a listing on our website. We also feature one restaurant a month in our newsletter and host a Grease Appreciate Dinner at their location.  Our partners are an integral part of our sustainability team when we travel to our educational  and civic engagements, as they are featured in our promotional materials.

So help us inform your customers!

We are asking that each of our partners to please send a hi-resolution version of their company logo, a brief description of their business, as well as their contact info (phone #, email address and web url) and physical address. Please pass this info along to greasegoddess[at]biofuels.coop.

So, keep an eye on our Partners in Sustainability page on our biofuels.coop site. The next iteration will offer locational information for each partner, as well as their logo, contact info and a brief self-description in a stand-alone profile.

We look forward to growing with you all far into the future.

Many thanks for all your support in creating a community that produces its own clean-burning, local biodiesel!

       Design-Build Ahead of the Curve

Despite a cold winter in North Carolina, PB's Design-Build team has been working up a sweat! We have survived winter and are springing into our busiest season ever!

Currently under construction are two of our continuous cavitational reactor systems; one 5 GPM manually-operated unit for the innovative leaders in Sustainable Workforce Development over at Central Carolina Community College, and one 15 GPM fully-automated unit for PA based commercial biodiesel producer Middletown Biofuels.

Both units will be
Moya, the Grease Goddess, in all her glory. delivered and operating next month. Our continuous cavitational reactor systems offer some of the lowest energy consumption in the industry, while also drastically reducing catalyst and methanol input and increasing production throughput!

Also in the works is a continuous vegetable oil degumming system for the removal of phospholipid from fresh pressed vegetable oils for western NC based Agrofuel, L.L.C. And, as always, we are aggressively pursuing innovative technologies and novel approaches for the renewable energy industry. Currently under construction, is a pilot-scale reactor utilizing a naturally-derived enzyme biocatalyst. This innovative catalyst will greatly improve reaction efficiency and eliminate the production of waste side streams in the biodiesel production process. Stay tuned for more!

Biomass Boilers are Hot!!

Biomass Boiler

Our Design-Build team just finished the installation of a biomass boiler system for our neighbor Screech Owl Greenhouse.  With these two custom 500,000 BTU/hr boilers Screech Owl is now able to heat their 5 greenhouses year-round on waste vegetable oil, biodiesel, and other low-carbon biomass fuels while reducing emissions and saving money over Liquid Propane or #2 Fuel Oil.  That means more delicious local produce for us, as well as cleaner air for everybody!  We're looking forward to his first crop of hot-house tomatoes any day now.

The custom biomass boiler system is just another innovative technology we've created through our experiences operating a sustainable biodiesel production facility here in Pittsboro, NC. We have been utilizing biomass fuels to heat our production process for a couple years now and we are excited to spread this biomass fueled boiler technology to anyone with moderate heating needs.

Servicing the Industry

In the first quarter of 2010 Piedmont completed two significant projects for the Biofuels Center of North Carolina, both of which are publicly available and both of which will help move North Carolina's biodiesel industry forward.

The first project, produced by Design-Build manager Nick Fox, was an overview of how existing biodiesel plants could add esterification to their processes. Esterification of lower grade fats, oils, and greases enables biodiesel producers to acquire less expensive feedstock, while still creating high quality biodiesel.

Piedmont has done extensive work on esterification at its Pittsboro facility and is planning a significant plant expansion in this area in the fall.  In keeping with its "open source" philosophy, Piedmont is making its research available to the rest of the industry.

The second project, produced by Research and Analytics coordinator Greg Austic, was a feasibility study on the available resource to support a trap grease to biofuels plant in Wake County. Working with the City of Raleigh, with trap grease collection companies, and with Eco-Collections out of Wilmington, a company currently in the used cooking oil collection business, the study assesses the possibility of bringing a trap-grease plant online.
Biodiesel Tax Incentive Alert

Currently, Biodiesel no longer receives a dollar per gallon tax credit. However, with your help, we can get this tax credit reinstated so that the biodiesel industry can continue to flourish and prosper.

The biodiesel tax credit pays for itself by creating more tax revenue than is spent. In 2009, the 450 million gallons of fuel produced by the US biodiesel industry supported 23,000 jobs in all sectors of the economy, added $4.1 billion to the US GDP, and generated $828 million in tax revenue for federal, state and local governments. That means the government spent $450mm on the credit and got back $828mm in revenue. Plus a lot of jobs.

Since the credit was passed the industry has grown from 25 million gallons in 2004 to 700 million gallons in 2008, displacing millions of barrels of petroleum and helping to make the US more energy independent.

Help us create more competitive pricing for biodiesel at the pump! Call your elected officials today.
