Fall is approaching and it is about time to renovate that tired, worn out lawn. A lawn restoration allows you to improve your lawn without removing the existing turf. Cornus mas 'Golden Glory'

 Cornelian Cherry Dogwood

Average Height: 15-20 ft.

Average Spread: 15-20 ft.

Hardiness Zone: 4-7

This drought tolerant, deciduous tree produces showy yellow flowers from mid February into March.

Its exfoliating bark provides winter interest while its cherry red edible fruits help attract birds in the fall.

With a more upright habit than the other Cornus mas cultivars, this attractive tree is disease and pest resistant. Cornelian Cherry Dogwood can be used in the landscape as a specimen or as a border planting. Due to its urban tolerance it may also be used in a city park or streetscape.

Project of the Month

Converting a side yard into a woodland oasis

Last month we converted a side yard with poor lawn performance into a woodland garden as well as addressed a drainage problem. For many years our customer attempted to grow turf in this area with little success.

They also had been struggling with a low lying area that collected water after rainstorms. To solve the drainage issue we installed two drainage wells to capture surface water. These wells were then connected to a drain pipe, allowing rain water to drain away from the area.

To complete the woodland garden our crew first removed the existing turf and tiled a layer of nutrient rich soil into the compacted native soils. Because we were extending the garden bed along the side of the home, there was a need to install a pathway. The pathway was constructed using Pennsylvania Bluestone steppers.

A mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs, perennials, ferns, and ground covers were then planted. The plant material was chosen to help provide seasonal interest and  be deer resistant. After all the plants were installed our crew finished the job by mulching the bed with double ground natural wood mulch.

Rehabilitate Your Landscape

Helping you get your garden back in shape

The summer turned up the heat and with the little rain we received this season many gardens are looking quite drab. When drought plagues the landscape, plants not suited for the conditions they are in will quickly show signs of stress. Continuous stress lowers plant performance and  severe stress may even kill the plant. stressed leaves

To limit plant stress it is important to make sure plants are located in the right place. Placing plants in the proper conditions will lower your maintenance needs and offer you a healthy flourishing landscape. Cedar Run Landscapes applies the "right plant, right place"  principle by understanding site conditions such as light and water availability, soil type, and weather extremes. With certified horticulturist and landscape technicians we can assure you that we will recommend plant material that will thrive in your garden.

Now is a great time to begin planning your garden make over this fall. It may be that you have lost an important tree specimen in your garden or  you'd like to transplant a few plants to a more suitable area.  Either way we can help with your landscape needs and remember Fall is for Planting.

If you have noticed that your garden has taken a hit this summer, Cedar Run Landscapes is here to help. Please contact us by e-mail or call at 215-653-0707.
