Help Beef Up the Blood Supply This AugustRed Cross

During August, the American Red Cross is asking the public to "Beef Up the Blood Supply" - literally and figuratively.

"Our blood supplies remain below desired levels, so we need to continue to work on replenishing, or beefing, up the blood supplies before the Labor Day weekend," said Lisa Hart, Donor Resources director.

The Red Cross and the PA Beef Council are offering a beefy incentive for presenting blood donors at Pennsylvania blood drive and blood platelet donor centers in August. Come in to donate and you're entered to win a grill, a beef quarter, or a case of steaks. At select locations during the month of August, the Beef Council also will be grilling burgers for presenting donors.

Other sponsors for this August promotion include: Kentucky Beef Council, Maryland Cattlemen's Association, Ohio Beef Council, Virginia Beef Council, West Virginia Beef Producer's Check-off, Lowes and Warehouse Sales.

For more information about Beef Up the Blood Supply visit www.redcrossblood.org. Dates and locations where donors will receive burgers will be posted on the PA Beef Council website. For additional information, contact Kristin Wilkins.

National Beef Quality Audit -- Take Short Survey
Cattle producers are being asked to provide their input to the 2011 National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) by taking a short survey at www.cattlesurvey.com.  The survey can be completed in approximately 10 minutes.

The 2011 NBQA, led by scientists from Colorado State University and Texas A&M University, is designed to collect and analyze information from cooler audits in the packing sector, face-to-face interviews with beef supply chain partners and for the first time cattle producers including feeders, stockers, cow-calf operators, and seedstock producers will be surveyed. According to Field, producer input is being sought to strengthen the measurement of quality-based practices implemented on farms and ranches that support consumer confidence in beef products and production systems.

Take the survey at www.cattlesurvey.com.

Meet Bobbi DunnBobbi Dunn

Dunn Farms was established in 1880, with the first Herefords arriving at the Cochranton, Mercer County farm in 1943. Bill and Bobbi Dunn, along with their children Walker and Reagan, now operate the heavily Hereford influenced cow-calf operation. Bill works off of the farm with his father and brother running a blacktop paving business. Bobbi spends most of her time on the farm, working part time as a hair dresser and serving as a 4-H leader.

The primary goal of Dunn Farms is to market quality feeder calves, which are predominantly Hereford influenced. The Dunn family also devotes time to the show circuit. Walker, who is an active 4-H member, recently exhibited a bull at the National Junior Hereford Show in Kansas City, Missouri. This was his first time exhibiting a bull, after showing numerous females previous years.
