Beef Check Mark
Did you know that farm to farm private treaty cattle sales must culminate in either the buyer or the seller remitting the $1 Beef Checkoff per head, to the state beef council? Often, bull sales or purchases through a broker/agent do not translate into the collection and remittance of the $1. Learn more at www.mybeefcheckoff.com.

It's Beef Month in PA!Giant Burger

The PA Beef Council visited Denny's Beer Barrel Pub, Clearfield, on Monday, May 9, to proclaim May as Beef Month in Pennsylvania. State Agriculture Secretary George Greig helped celebrate by cutting into the giant, 15-pound burger prepared especially for the event.

Denny's Beer Barrel Pub was founded in 1977 by Denny and Jean Liegey, and is now widely known as the home of the world's largest hamburger challenges.  "We welcomed more than 200,000 customers last year through our door," Denny Liegey commented.  "I like to say about 90 percent of them were ordering hamburgers."

Several local officials joined Secretary Greig at the event including Clearfield County Commissioners Mark McCracken, Joan McMillen and John Sobel. The Governor's Special Advisor for Agriculture, Boots Hetherington, was also on hand to present Leigey with the official proclamation.

Wine & Food Festival
Wine & Food
Despite a rainy forecast, the National Harbor Wine and Food Festival was sold out this year. An estimated 10,000 people made their way to Washington DC this past weekend to taste the best wine, beer, and beef!

The Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) partnered again with Roseda Beef; the smell of their beef brisket on the grill drew people from across the festival to the beef booth.  The laid back festival visitors had no problem waiting in line for a piece of the brisket!

The inaugural Spice My Steak Competition was also a big hit this year. Maria Evans, Executive Chef at Grandville Moore's, won the competition with her jumpier berry dry rub.

Veal Tour

Veal Barn The PA Beef Council partnered with Marcho Farms, Franconia, Pa., and the beef checkoff to host an educational farm tour on Thursday, April 28. Sixteen students and a chef instructor from the Philadelphia Art Institute's culinary program attended the one-day event, gaining a first-hand look at the veal industry, from farm gate to dinner plate. Post-event surveys showed tour participants were pleased, providing comments like, "very informative, great tour" and "tour was amazing."

Know Farming, Know Beef!

Know Farming The Beef Checkoff, through the Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI), hosted the 2011 NEBPI Beef Boot Camp on May 11 in Hadley and Hatfield, MA.

The conference included a half day panel of speakers and presenters from the beef industry, followed by a half day farm tour of the Luther-Belden dairy farm owned and operated by the Darryl and Lucinda Williams family in Hatfield, MA.  The boot camp provided retail meat managers and department supervisors an excellent opportunity to get a first hand understanding of modern-day farming in their region as well as learn about the most recent trends and beef and veal promotions available to them.  A total of 46 retailers representing approximately 325 retail locations attended the event.

Meet Diane Hoover

DianeDiane Hoover, and her husband Reid, milk 170 registered Holsteins, and farm 200 acres, in Lebanon County.  The Hoover family has owned the land since 1963, with Diane & Reid becoming the sole proprietors in 1997.  Diane & Reid have four children - Brad, Aaron, Brenden, & Audrey.  Brad now farms with his mom and dad, while the other three children are in college.

Diane grew up on a farm and always enjoyed working with dairy animals, as did Reid.  Once they married, they knew they wanted to farm for a living and it's where they wanted to raise their children.  The most rewarding part of Diane's job today?  Producing safe and nutritious milk that consumers want, and need, and in a good year, making a little profit doing a job she likes.
