Got Old Monofillament Line?

Pictured Above: A tangled baby turtle, taken at the Freeport Jetties on Surfside Island.
Dont forget that Surfside Marina offers free recycling!
Bring your old line in to the store and walk away with a sound concience!
The used monofilament is chopped up, melted down, and the plastic is then used to manufacture new plastic fishing-related products like tackle boxes, spools for lines, and artificial fish habitats. It is not made into more monofilament line.
Monofilament fishing line is non-biodegradable and can last up to 600 years in the aquatic environment. Even fishing line that is thrown in the garbage can end up in the environment by blowing out of the garbage can or landfill, or by being taken out by birds or animals, so please dispose of your fishing line responsibly.
Surfside Marina has a recepticle upstairs for your mono line and we will be installing more recepticles along the docks.

NOAA Galveston Sea Turtle Facility
The NOAA Galveston Sea Turtle Facility is a rehabilitation center for wild turtles that responds 24 hours a day to live turtle strandings. The members of this group are interested in ANY seat turtle that is observed from Freeport to Sabine Pass. Whether the turtle is dead, tangled in line, appears ill, or has been caught by recreational hook and line; they are interested in knowing.
If a wild turtle has been caught by recreational hook and line, NOAA Galveston Sea Turtle Facility can remove the hook orally or surgically if necessary. Even if the turtle spits the hook out, the members examine the turtle with radiography to ensure previous hooks have not been ingested.
In 2011 the group rehabilitated over 70 turtles, all of which were reported by the public or local agencies. The state number to call to report a turtle is 1-866-TURTLE-5. For Surfside to Sabine Pass the direct number to call is 409-771-2872. |
