Artist in the spotlight this month is Kelly Kuhlman. She is an extraordinary wildlife and nature watercolor artist. Kelly captures spirit with the stroke of her brush. I recently interviewed her for this newsletter.
Q. What is art in your opinion? To me, art is about charisma, flow and utter expression of the
self.
Q. What is your favorite medium? Why? Definitely water color. It is a lot like life in many ways: always
running together and rarely ever how you thought it would be, full of unexpected
surprises and a great teaching of allowing yourself to go with the flow.
Q. What tools do you normally use to create art?

I use a mix of different types of watercolor:
Gauche, translucent tubes and pigment based dyes. Gauche is great to fill in
bold lines and definition. Translucent tubes allow for blending and backgrounds. And, dyes really "pop" your subject matter by creating drama and
contrast.
Q. What inspires you to create? Because I am so involved with wildlife both spiritually and
physically, I really have to connect and be in the moment with my subject. I
also "think" in colors and find it challenging to recreate something that I see
whether it be a look in the eyes or fine details like rendering the appearance
of fur or feathers.
Q.
What method do you follow when creating?
Method? What method? I am self taught, so I am still working on
that one.
Q. How do you feel when you create art?
I feel special in the world. That no matter what I
do in life, I will always have my art.
