Greetings!
It's the lovely month of October and once again time for us to begin our journey into art together. Shall we begin?

The Ink Stick
Ink Stick
As a Sumi-e painter, for me, the grinding and preparation of the ink is a wonderful meditation before I begin my painting. I prepare my work in the traditional way. However, my Sumi-e style is 'Contemporary Sumi-e' reaching beyond the limits of traditional ink painting.

Traditionally, ink was made by grinding an ink stick on a moist ink stone. This method is still favored by many brush painters today. Shanghai Premium Ink Stick produces a smooth, shiny brown-black permanent ink for calligraphy and painting. Above is an example of a Shanghai Premium Ink Stick. Black ink sticks range from the inexpensive to the very rare and quite expensive.  Read more......
Artist in the Spotlight
  Kelly Kuhlman
Three Birds
Artist in the spotlight this month is Kelly Kuhlman. She is an extraordinary wildlife and nature watercolor artist. Kelly captures spirit with the stroke of her brush. I recently interviewed her for this newsletter.

Q. What is art in your opinion?

To me, art is about charisma, flow and utter expression of the self.

Q. What is your favorite medium? Why?

Definitely water color. It is a lot like life in many ways: always running together and rarely ever how you thought it would be, full of unexpected surprises and a great teaching of allowing yourself to go with the flow.

Q. What tools do you normally use to create art? Orchids

I use a mix of different types of watercolor: Gauche, translucent tubes and pigment based dyes. Gauche is great to fill in bold lines and definition. Translucent tubes allow for blending and backgrounds.  And, dyes really "pop" your subject matter by creating drama and contrast.

Q. What inspires you to create?

Because I am so involved with wildlife both spiritually and physically, I really have to connect and be in the moment with my subject. I also "think" in colors and find it challenging to recreate something that I see whether it be a look in the eyes or fine details like rendering the appearance of fur or feathers.

GiraffeQ.  What method do you follow when creating?

Method? What method? I am self taught, so I am still working on that one.

Q.  How do you feel when you create art?

I feel special in the world. That no matter what I do in life, I will always have my art.

Kelly's art and wildlife collections are available at Simple Spirit.

Tulips Three
On a Personal Note....

I am a proud member of the Art for Cancer (AFC) Group. We are a global group of artists that have banded together to help fight the dreadful disease of cancer with what we do best ~ create art. We offer selected pieces of our artwork for purchase and donate a portion (10%-100%) of the proceeds from the sale of the work to cancer research and various cancer charities.

The sumi-e you see here is called Tulips Three and is one of my offerings with the AFC group. A fine art print and/or cards may be purchased at my Sumi Gallery. I will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this art to Breast Cancer Research.

October is 'Breast Cancer Awareness' month. The Art for Cancer group has just launched our new video on YouTube in honor of breast cancer awareness called 'Pink Energy'. Please take a moment to view our video.

Our group offers stunning artworks by established global artists.

Visit us at Art for Cancer. And, visit our Squidoo Lens to learn more about us, see featured artists, and discover our history.
Again, I hope you have enjoyed receiving and reading this Sumi-e newsletter. If so, I encourage you to forward it to your friends and family and ask them to register. I am enhanceing my art base and can only succeed with the help of friends like you.
