  Journey Into Art
Leaves of Life
This Sumi-e is located in the Gallery Journey Into Art and is called 'Leaves of Life'.  It was inspired by the joy and spirit of life and how we are all enfolded in life's experiences.

This sumi-e just flowed from my brush as if directed by divine intervention and was an incredible experience. It was a complete journey into art!

Artist in the Spotlight
Ann Nall
Black dogI would like to introduce you to my friend and pet portrait artist, Ann Nall. She lives on two coasts, Carmel, CA. and Boston, MA. Ann captures the spirit of your pet in watercolor for you to enjoy forever. I recently interviewed Ann for this newsletter.

Q. What is art in your opinion?
A.   Art is in the eye of the beholder. I might not appreciate someone covered in mud squatting in the corner of the museum, but others do. That's what counts.  Mostly I appreciate art to which I have an emotional response, whether joy, serenity, distress or awe.

Q.  Do you create art other than pet portraits?
A.   Yes.  Painting pets, for me, is "tight" work. I sometimes need to shake loose and play outside the boundaries of exactness and the "truth" that clients are looking for from their pet's picture.

Q. What inspires you to    create?
A. For pets, the inspiration comes from the deadlines and commitments I've made.  For other art, it is a feeling, almost a need, to lose myself in a project, to see where it goes, to see what happens.

Q. What method do you follow when creating?
A.  First, painting a portrait is different that creating.   A pet portrait is skill combined with observation.  A method for creating for me means letting all else go; to trust the hand and the inner part of me to merge, allowing the work of art to come into being.

Q. How do you feel when you create art?
A.   Free.

A Book Not To Be Missed!
The Book of Tea by Kakuzo Okakura
Book of Tea

About the Author:
Okakura (1863-1913) was an administrator and scholar who had a profound effect on art and aesthetics both in Japan and the West. He helped found an arts college and in 1904 became an assistant curator at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. Through his writings, Okakura was able to permanently affect the way the West viewed Japan and Asia. Kakuzo Okakura was a member of the O'keeffe/Stieglitz bohemean art group.

About The Book of Tea:
The book is a classic 1906 essay on tea drinking, its history, aesthetics, and deep connection to Japanese culture. Kakuzo Okakura felt "Teaism" could influence the world: "Tea with us becomes more than an idealization of the form of drinking; it is a religion of the art of life. This was one of Georgia O'keeffe's favorite books. My favorite chapter is chapter five - Flowers. It was her favorite chapter also. When Georgia was an old woman and could not see well anymore, she would ask her nurse to read chapter five - Flowers - to her everyday. This book is one of my 'all time' favorites and I want to share it with you.
