Greetings!

My hope and prayer for each of you is that you will be surrounded by friends and family during this season of Thanksgiving, sharing in the blessings of loved ones and enjoying a joyful celebration. In spite of our economic challenges, we in the USA have so muchto be thankful for, no doubt about it.  And thanks to so many of you, there are several hundred orphaned or abandoned children in Kenya who will also have food to eat, clothing to wear, loving adults to care for them, and the knowledge that God is watching over them, no matter what.  So let us all join together this Thanksgiving season, with gratitude to God for His goodness and mercy, joining the Psalmist who declares:

"Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever.  Psalm 136:1

In this edition of our newsletter, we also give thanks for
  • EXCITEMENT:  The Eilers share with us the wonderful visit they had with their sponsored child in Kenya;
  • URGENCY:  Our continued appeal for (now) $5,000 to help with a critical food shortage at Mary's Shelter Children Rehabilitation Centre in Ngong; and
  • MIRACULOUS:  Meet Judith and Scholastica, our two longest-in-residence Shepherds Home children who have now begun their higher education at Daystar University.
May the Lord bless you and keep you, now and forevermore, in the palm of His loving hand.

 A Visit with Henry

Henry and Eilers 2011
The Eilers and Henry

"Our last day in Kenya we visited Henry Osiro, a 9 year-old boy we sponsor through Discover the World.  Henry lives at this Sheltered Children Rehabilitation Home because his father was killed and his mother paralyzed in a car accident.  Mary, the director of the center, is one amazing woman.   She along with staff are responsible for 170 children.  The older ones are in boarding schools  much of the year while Mary is bit by bit adding classrooms and dormitories to ultimately be able to house and school them all. We send her $50 a month to help feed, house, clothe and educate Henry, and provide medical care. On our way to the shelter we picked up a boy, Bradan, who had recently had jaw surgery.

Bradan Aug 2011
Bradan, 2 months after jaw surgery

He had been in a car accident where his parents had been killed and his facial bones so fractured that he had been unable to hardly open his mouth and had been living on a liquid diet.  Mary was able to get him to a surgeon to correct the problem.  We spent a full day at the children's center and saw Mary's desperate attempts to provide for the children.  She, as most Kenyans, is very creative and enterprising trying to find ways to increase their revenue so to have money for the raising food prices and the overwhelming costs of everything.  At the children's Playful Kidshome they raise their own vegetables, they have cows for the children's milk, they have a water tower so to sell water to the village, they are starting a fish farm, the children make bags and beaded jewelry to sell and on and on.  It is a daily act of faith trying to make ends meet.  We would encourage anyone who is moved by the plight of Kenya to adopt one of these children or give an amount toward whatever the urgent need of the moment might be...which is usually food for the children.  Mary won my trust wholeheartedly and we found the center to be a very loving, healthy place for children.  The teachers showed us their teaching materials which were actually quite good. I am shamelessly am encouraging others to help these children..."

Food Shortage at Mary's
During this Season of Thanksgiving I am reminded of how blessed I am and how much I have to be thankful for, especially right after  receiving an urgent email
from Mary recently, who runs Shelter Children's Home, explaining of the food shortage they are having due to the increase in food prices. She described in her email, "Its hard, but I Know God is working behind the scenes, food is an issue. Although we are dealing with one day at a time, its not a healthy situation. I know we shall be okay, but when things are this tough we need to hold hands and pray that God hastens a miracle. Thank you for being there for us." We are trying to raise $5,000 to send her by the end of the year, and if you or someone you know is interested in helping her with the 170 hungry mouths to feed, we would be extremely grateful. You can donate on our website by clicking the link below and then selecting Emergeny Relief to have it go to help this food crisis.

From Whom All Blessings Flow

During our trip in August I got to spend some time with our two students who just began their first year in Universiy. What an incredible transformation I have seen when I first met them over 8 years ago. I just recently received the first emails from both of them, thanks to the generosity of donors who helped us get them laptops to use while they are in school. Here are some of the wonderful things they had to share about their time in school so far:

"Hello dad. I am glad that we can now be communicating. I'm doing well here at  Daystar University, since  I am now used to the school and have met many new friends from different countries. Everyone is so friendly, including the lecturers and I'm very happy here. I love everything about the school, especially the beautiful scenery and the rocks. We even have monkeys and squirels inScolastica the compound. The location of the school offers a very conducive environment for learning. Our hostels are so comfortable and I share the room with 3other girls including Judy. We have a huge library and a computer lab which offers free internet browsing. The meals are very good, made almost just like home. Judy and I have joined some clubs in school, where we are able to socialize with other students. We also participate games like badminton and volleyball. We even get to go home during the weekends, that way we are never homesick.Thankyou so much for the laptop, it has been of great help to me. I use it to type my assignments and listen to music. I'm very happy about it since it will enable me to do research and to communicate with you, my family and friends. All the same, I'm working really hard in my studies and promise to get good grades. I am pursuing a course in Business Administration and Management, majoring in Accounting. We have already done one exam and I know I have performed well.I have always wanted to go to the university since I was in primary school and I thank you for making my dream a reality. May God bless you all abudantly for your love and support. I love you so much and you are always in my prayers."

Doug and Judy (August 2011) "Here in the campus I am doing well and very happy since this is a dream come true. The lessons are also very fun and life in campus is equally enjoyable except that you have to be very disciplined academically and in all the other aspects of life that I engage mself into, like friendship and others.I  am also very amused since the school has animals such as snakes, gecko, wild lizards and others. I thank God so much for the laptop I received from Discover the World. I am really greateful because it is helping me to improve my typing skills which I do everyday before I retire to my bed and also for entertainment which I use only in the weekends not forgetting research purposes as well. I really love it and thank God for it always when I am using it.These are services that I never even asked God for, I was thankful since He was actually taking me to the university, only to find out that still more was hidden in store for me. Sincerely, God is loving, caring, and very understanding. My purpose in Daystar is to do my best with all the resources I have and to make my world a better place. I never thought that I could also end up in the campus but it is through God that am here. May God bless all those who have been touching my life now and then and I pray that as soon as I succeed, I will also touch other's lives. I thank all of you for giving me such an opportunity and encouraging me with your letters full of love that am very special and unique. May you live to please God all through your lives and I believe that you are more than blessed since you have touched so many lives. May God always bless you and  open up doors for you wherever you go.
