Greetings!
We hope this newsletter finds you well as the hustle and bustle of the new school year begins for many. Even in the midst of America's most difficult economic recession in decades, most all of us take for granted that our children will go to school, and we can hardly imagine what life would be like for our children without an education, without the ability to read, write or obtain skills... but this is the future faced by so many children in Kenya, especially the girls.
An urgent appeal came this week from our friends Stu & Linda Ross, directors for Kenya of the Presbyterian Outreach Foundation. In their letter they quoted from Greg Mortenson's 'Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools:
"Studies by the World Bank indicate that just one year of primary school can result in an income bump of 10% to 20% for women in later life."
"Where a majority of girls are educated, infant mortality drops significantly after a single generation."
"No other factor even comes close to matching the cascade of positive changes triggered by teaching a single girl how to read and write."

Discover the World is dedicated to helping stabilize Kenya's future, one child at a time, especially the girl-child....and we need your help to do it. We currently have 82 children sponsored and receiving a full education through high school... of which 40 are girls. ONE HUNDRED NINE children remain on our waiting list for sponsorship... FIFTY-TWO of whom are girls. If nothing happens between now and January 1, 2011 these children will not have a school to go to. We can make a life-changing difference for these children with very little investment. Discover the World can educate and care for these children for just $50/month.
Won't you please join with us? Even though things are tough across the US, we can accomplish this task...we can join together and help provide hope to these children to whom we have been entrusted. This could be a manageable monthly donation for:
· An entire family,
· a classroom,
· your church's Alternative Christmas giving,
· a Sunday School Class,
· a Rotary, Kiwanis, or Scout club
· your sorority or fraternity,
· for your employees association (or matching gift)
· or a Men's or Women's Group.

Manicuring to make a difference
While at All Church Camp with La Canada Presbyterian Church this summer, Emma Schaedel and Kathryn Jacinto came up with a great way of raising money to help children in Kenya.... giving manicures. These two young girls raised enough money to buy four Life Straws, which will provide clean drinking water for four children for over two years. Lack of sanitary drinking water and the diseases it causes actually kills more young children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined (UNICEF and WHO. 2009. Diarrhoea: Why children are still dying and what can be done.) Emma and Kathryn are two great examples of how a little can go a long way in making a life changing difference.

Meet Pricilla Pricilla is eight years old and in the 4th grade. She became an orphan when she was just four years old after her mother was murdered during land clashes in the Rift Valley. When she was killed, her three children were displaced and the local authorites referred them to Shelter Children's Home for care and protection. Pricilla is a very sweet little girl and a hard worker. She wants to be a pilot when she grows up. We have partnered with Shelter Children's Home to try and get sponsors for all of the 200 children there so they can continue to receive love, care, and an education. Please help us give these children a brighter future.

Please consider this opportunity, and join us in helping to keep these uneducated children from living on the streets and suffering more pain in their lives. Help us to Inspire Hope in each one.... And may God bless you greatly for your generosity.
