Abandoned babies in Eldoret, Kenya

by Dr. Jackie Millham Co-Founder of Discover the World

Jackie with babyI've recently had the joy of traveling to Kenya this Spring to visit our Shepherd's Home children as well as meet with our new partners.  I feel so moved by these Kenyan men and women who have answered God's call on their lives to take in dozens of homeless children and raise them in a loving, safe environment.  I met Mary who runs a home outside of Nairobi for nearly 200 children.  We're beginning a new partnership with her to find people like yourself for the 120 boys and girls who still need sponsors.  Then there are Joshua and Miriam who have a children's home for nearly 100 children who are abandoned and infected with HIV.  Obediah and Margaret have taken in 17 boys who now are thriving in school but would be in the streets otherwise. But the need extends even beyond these homes.

We had heard about an enormous problem with children abandoned on the streets in dumpsters, bushes or just along the side of the road. We have been wanting to find ways to help these little ones who need placement and have no where to go because the Children's homes are full.  I can't keep an image out of my mind.  We were in Eldoret, a city near the Ugandan border and were visiting the hospital that receives the abandoned babies who come in at frightening numbers. babyjune Since nursing staff isn't available to give them the attention they need and there are no family members there to soothe and comfort, these frightened babies lie in metal cribs alone and crying.  Baby trafficking is a problem, so the metal cribs have lids, giving them the appearance of a cage.  And they are locked, to protect the children from people who might attempt to steal them for sale.

One little boy was crying inconsolably.   We reached our hands in to touch him and tears filled our eyes when we could do nothing to help.  I stood amazed as Patrick, our new Discover the World partner, who has risen to take the challenge of opening an Abandoned Baby Reception center, reach in and place his hands on this little boy's body, cradling his head and rubbing his stomach.  While Patrick was making a soothing sound with his voice, I stood amazed as this little boy calmed down.  I thought to myself, every abandoned baby should be in this man's arms!  Patrick and his wife, Ruth, also run a home for 30 children.  Even so, they feel called by God to convert a guest cottage on their property to an Abandoned Babies Reception Center so these little ones don't have to spend nights in a locked crib with no one to hold them, feed them and love them.

As I met with Patrick and Ruth as well as Mary and the others, I knew I am not able to do what they do.  But I can help!   I can tell the great news of their stories so that others can join with Discover the World  to sponsor the children they house, feed, nurture and love day in and day out.  We all can do something.  Doug and I are sponsoring a child and feel blessed to do so.  Won't you join us and extend a hand to help  these precious boys and girls who need the touch of Christ through these amazing men and women?  I believe you'll feel blessed as you do.

A Letter of Thanks and News from Neema House

Trusting you and your families are all well.
It is good to be able to update you on the progress and challenges of Neema Children's home.

We rejoice in the Lord as He commands us in His word. In the book of saint John 16:33, Jesus told His disciples that we belong elsewhere and that amidst trials, God IS with us in the situations that challenge our lives.
Neema family is well. God has given us favour in that cour chilren are in reasonable health. There are some who have different infections like throat infections but nothing serious. We give all the flory to Jesus and tell of His love as the old chorus goes.

With the blessing of relatively good health, we have other challenges and therefore would request your prayers. We are in the Process of applying for a renewal of NCH registration. There before, children's homes used to register once and for all but now, for obvious reasons, and of course for better supervision of these homes, the government has said registrations must be done every 3 years. Our registration expires end of this month. Renewal of registration is just like applying for a new registration which is quite tedious exercise in terms of money and time. Please pray with us that we find favour in the eyes of those concerned.

Since we started Neema school, we have been trying to register with no success, another involving exercise. Thankfully, we are not far from being registered as a school. Please remember this need in your prayers too.

As may be expected, other challenges face us but all is in the hands of the Almighty God, the able God. Kindly remember us in your prayers. Thank you so much for your prayers and encouraging us, God bless you all.

Greetings from Miriam, and all of us at Neema,
The peace of God be with you,
Joshua

A Special Reflection...
.
Dear Beloved Friends of Discover the World:

In this issue of our DTW Newsletter we have enjoyed bringing you a few snapshots and updated images of God's hand on the lives of the children we serve, and the partners we assist in Kenya.  Please keep them all in your daily prayers, as they continue in extraordinary faithfulness to serve the Gospel of Jesus Christ through their loving-kindness, mercy and love.

This past March, Jackie and I were joined by one of our very dedicated board members Janice McGlashan for an encouraging and uplifting site visit to Kenya, where we saw first hand the excitement and hope bursting out of the children and young adults we are privileged to serve.  Along the way, God opened our eyes to the joy he is bringing to so many children and communities through your gifts and our efforts.

  • Baby Reception Center: (See article below): Thanks to your financial assistance, and that of our partners in England (www.playourpart.org ) Discover the World will soon assisting Care4Kids (Patrick & Ruth Chege) to rescue up to 20 abandoned infants in Eldoret.  We hope to be open sometime this summer.
  • Neema House is growing with the addition of their new school (see article below).  They ask for our prayers for the challenges they are facing.
  • Shepherds Home children:  They are "flourishing" under Mac and Nelly's excellent parenting and guidance.  As just one example, we met with a dozen of the older Shepherds Home children, all now well into high school, and heard first-hand the happiness and security they feel, and the hope they express for the future.  Really, I should soon stop calling them "children", since really, they are not children any more, but young adults,  such as twins Geoffrey and Charles, proud in their high school uniforms, voices deepening, dreams expanding, as they move closer to adulthood.  What a miracle it is to watch them over these years.
  • Obediah: Renovation of the original home and addition of a kitchen are almost complete, with great joy in all of their voices and eyes.

Finally I ask your prayers for our DTW office and staff here in Pasadena.  The economy has finally caught up to us here in our operational center.  Thank God, the funding for the children through our sponsorships is stable and solid, and should carry them through high school and into adulthood, where the Lord knows the plans he has for them.  As for us, we trust God to provide, and at the same time are reducing our expenses to the greatest extent possible.  We are considering closing the Pasadena office, and operating as a "virtual" ministry, if administrative funding is not available.  Even so, we celebrate that "all these things have happened so that we might rely not upon ourselves, but upon the God who raises the dead" (2 Cor 1:9).  May He be praised forever.

Christ,

Doug Millham
