What Should I Feed My Dog?
What you feed your dog really does matter
Many people ask us, "What do you feed your dog?" They see the way that our dogs' coats are so shiny and feel how they are so soft! We feed a food called "Taste of the Wild". There are three different flavors of this food, but they are really all the same in nutritional content. Taste of the Wild (TOW) is a grainless diet, meaning that it is made without the corn and rice fillers that are found in most shelf brand foods (such a IAMS, etc). The ingredients only include materials that are highly digestible and useful to your dog's body. Since this is a high quality food, it is slightly more expensive than your average brands, however you end up feeding MUCH less because it takes less to give your dog all the nutrition his body needs. The foods are designed for all stages of life, so it is appropriate for puppies on up to older adults. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are added to the food blend, to give your dog the shiny coat and nice skin that he was born to have! Take a look at the website for more information about the nutritional content. In addition to the plus side of having a healthy coat and skin, your dog's "output" will be much smaller and easier to pick up! This is because he is now absorbing more of the ingredients, and leaving very little behind. Currently, TOW comes in only a dry formula, but is working on a canned version of its popular food. It's important to give dogs, especially little dogs, crunchy kibble as part of their diet, to assist in keeping your pooch's chompers healthy. If you decide to give canned food, be sure to mix it in with the kibble so that your dog is getting the best of both worlds. We recommend a brand called "Wellness" that is also a grainless formula, and can be purchased at Whole Foods Supermarkets. Off-Leash K9 highly recommends Taste of the Wild for your dog, We have personally seen a HUGE improvement in the condition of all our dogs, to include coats, skin and energy endurance within three weeks of switching from Science Diet to TOW. |

Off-Leash K9 Introduces New Team Member
Off-Leash K9 Dog Training has five new German Shepherd puppies that they are adding to their dog training team. The pups (one of them pictured here) were born in late May, and are just a month away from beginning their training. The dogs are pure-bred German Shepherds, whose mother was imported from Germany in April.
The dogs come from very rich, German-working bloodlines, and have superior potential as personal protection dogs, working dogs, family and companion dogs, etc. The dogs will be trained and then placed, depending on individual training, and based on how the client chooses to use the dog. One of the dogs (maybe the one pictured?) may possibly be used as a demo dog for Off-Leash K9 Tulsa Dog Training. Stay tuned! |
Off-Leash K9 Client Off To See The Wizard
Off-Leash K9 Dog Training of Tulsa has a client that is soon to be a star. Eli, a 3 lb. Pomeranian and client of Off-Leash K9 Tulsa Dog Training, is starring in "The Wizard of Oz" in Bartlesville, Oklahoma July 16-19. The event is to be held each night at the Bartlesville Community Center.
Eli, of course, is playing the part of "Toto." Julie McKinney (Eli's owner), gives Off-Leash K9 plenty of thanks for the transformation she has seen in Eli:
"After only a few weeks of having my new best friend Eli, I was ready to get rid of him. He was out of control! Luckily, I came across Off-Leash K9 online. They brought one of their own dogs for a free demo that blew me away. It was unbelievable. I honestly did not believe they could train Eli to do the things they demonstrated with their dog. It seemed crazy, until after my first lesson where Eli became a whole new dog. Thanks to Off-Leash K9 Dog Training of Tulsa, my out of control little pom is a quiet, calm, friendly and obedient dog. People constantly comment on how well behaved he is, and how he is nothing like the toy dogs the have come across. Wouldn't trade him for the world now, it's hard to think I was so close to giving up on him. Off-Leash K9 works miracles with dogs. They definitely did with mine. He now is able to go to work with me and everywhere else I go. He and I are both much happier." |

Handling An Aggressive Dog |
|
If you have ever owned or been around an aggressive or dominant dog, then you know the importance of getting control of him or her. Good obedience training will help keep the dog, other dogs and people safer. You need to understand something about aggressive dogs: Most dog aggression (unless the dog has been bred and trained to be aggressive) comes from one of two places...dominance or fear. If professional dog training is not in your budget, or you simply don't have the time, here are some suggestions that may help you deal with your aggressive dog.
1. Have your dog spayed or neutered. Doing so will reduce hormonal dominance levels. Check with your veterinarian to discuss your best options.
2. Stop playing rough with your dog. Roughhousing games (like tug of war, wrestling, etc.) teach your dog that challenging you is fun. When your dog wins, he thinks he is stronger than you; and stronger dogs are always higher in the social hierarchy of the pack. In addition, do not allow your dog or puppy to "play bite". This teaches him bad habits.
3. Teach your dog the "down" command and use it throughout the day. The down position (where the dog is lying down) is a submissive position. Many dogs, especially fearful or dominant dogs do not like this position. So, instead of letting your dog wander around the house or go where he pleases, make him lie down and stay there while you're preparing dinner, watching television, changing your clothes, etc. Make your dog stay down for at least a full 30 minutes every day.
4. Make your dog work for praise. If your dog approaches you and demands to be petted, then make him sit or down first. He needs to learn that you are the dominant one, and that you make the rules, not him.
5. Lead your dog...stop letting him lead you. You need to be the first one to walk through doors, the first to eat, and the first to decide where you're going to walk. Alpha dogs never walk behind the pack. They always lead. Establish yourself as the leader by making your dog wait on you.
6. Do not let your dog sleep on the bed. And do not let your dog sleep on your child's bed. Annette Adams, owner of Off-Leash K9 Dog Training in Tulsa says, "There are sometimes more dominance and aggression problems created by people who let their dogs sleep on their bed, than perhaps any other single behavior." The pack leader always sleeps on higher ground. Subordinate dogs sleep on lower ground. Being higher (or on top) is a dominance behavior.
7. When your dog misbehaves, correct him. Make sure that your dog gets corrected every time he exhibits an unwanted behavior. If you are uncertain as to the best way to correct them, consult a professional dog trainer. In the meantime, a good, strong "off" will work. Never hit or kick your dog. This can create fear, which in turn can create more aggression.
8. Be the one who decides when your dog is allowed to meet other people and dogs. Do not let your dog immediately run up to people or other dogs to greet them. You need to decide when and how that happens.
Handling an aggressive dog is something that needs to involve a lot of care and preparation, but it doesn't have to be something that causes you fear. Just follow these tips and you will be on your way to learning how to handle aggressive dogs. |
