News to Note August 2009
Greetings!

So much great news to share!  CAS has two new programs with pilot families moving forward with their adoptions.  Families are preparing for back to school and wrapping up summer fun.  Carolina Adoption Services is excited about the new programs and some of our standards that are moving along really well (Russia & Korea).  Enjoy the great news!
Mexico Here We Come!
Celebrate Mexico
CAS has been notified that the registration certificate from Mexico is signed and a copy will be sent to us this week!

Our first two dossiers have been sent to Mexico and we wait now for them to be approved and wait on a match of a child.  This is an excellent program to watch as we anticipate our first few pilot families to move along smoothly.  The program will open to new applicants once we determine the procedures and timelines.

Georgia on My Mind!
Little girl from Georgia
A country of future interest to families certainly may be the Republic of Georgia.  CAS has worked with Georgian officials for many years providing humanitarian projects and assisting with the placement of orphaned children.

CAS currently has a small number of families piloting this program with dossiers submitted and the pilot program is moving forward.

Back to School Hints & Tips!

School will soon be underway.  This may be a time when adoptive parents struggle with, "should we tell the school our child was adopted into our family?  Why?  What business is it of theirs?"  Such information, when used properly, can aid in properly understanding your child's academic performance and help your child's teacher deal with school projects and assignments, as well as promote your child's self-esteem with his or her peers.
  • W-I-S-E Up!  A great way to approach questions.  W = Walk away; I = It's private; S = Share if you like; E = Educate the person.
  • Help child answer questions with which they are comfortable.
  • Be an advocate at school for your child.
  • Help teachers to rethink assignments.

Ways to bring adoption into the classroom:

  • Read an adoption story to the class
  • Give an adoption presentation
  • Celebrate national adoption day

Trudy Tobias, LCSW, CAS education coordinator, has more information and back to school kits for those interested in learning more.  Contact Trudy for more information.

We hope you find these useful.  Look for more Hints & Tips to come in following News to Notes.  Do you have recommendations to other families?  Let Siri Scott know and she will include them in a later issue.
