Making Strides in the Ride for Hope!

Greetings!

Happy New Year! EAF(R)logolr

It's nearly 2012! What an exciting year. Thank you for you continued support and commitment to help equestrians and horsemen suffering from catastrophic illnesses and injuries. We hope you'll consider making a donation in 2011. There are still a few days remaining  to receive a tax deduction for this year.

Below is a special treat - an inspiring update from recipient Rick Albertson. You may remember his story from the June issue. Special thanks to Rick and Joanne Bonano for sharing this update and new picture of Rick riding last month! The update and the link to his full story are below.

Rick is just one of now, 100 recipients! Your donations throughout our 15 years have helped 100 horse people who were in dire need of assistance. This month's applicant review brought the approval of our milestone 100th recipient. Expect to learn more in the next issue.

Details are below on our big annual fundraiser  - the Sidelines Tetrathlon. Be sure to get your tickets now. Last year was a sold out event! We've added lots of new - like the Super XLVI Saloon - but kept the great feel of the Wild West. Touted by many as the "best event of the season," there is still time to be a part of this fun-filled evening.

Now you have a perfect reason to enjoy the local restaurants. Sign up with GoodDining and you'll be mading a donation every time you use your credit card to buy a meal from an approved restaurant. Check out the GoodDining website to see all the approved restaurants in your area! Details below.

As always, thank you for your generous donations and memberships. To date, we have distributed more than $1.8 million to help those in need. We would be unable to continue our mission without you. Thank you for sharing this ride for hope.

Happy New Year!

Update on EAF Recipient Rick Albertson

"Before" photo - Rick at Dana Farber Cancer Institute for a stem cell transplant in June 2010.

"Since being diagnosed with Lymphoma and Leukemia in May of 2007, I have been literally fighting for survival. The Equestrian Aid Foundation generously stepped in to help with my finances while I am recovering and working myself back to good health. I am happy to say that with the help of some very good old friends and some very good new friends at the EAF, I have been able to survive the financial struggles that accompanied the disease.  Although a long way from being perfect, I am finding myself "back in the saddle" again! Thank you EAF from the bottom of my heart." H. Rick Albertson

Excerpted from the June 2011 issue:  "We all hope it never happens, but there may come a time in our lives when we need to turn to a friend for help. This is what the EAF is to me - a friend. Ever since I was diagnosed with lymphoma and leukemia in 2007, my battle had been a long one and a true struggle to survive. In June 2010, I was extremely fortunate to receive a stem cell transplant at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The transplant saved my life, but my life hasn't been what it used to be for quite some time. I was told that the procedure would be difficult, that it would be painful and that for at least one year my immune system would be seriously compromised. I would not be able to leave the house for fear of infection. I needed to remain in an antiseptic environment. Grass and dirt were dangerous. The stable was totally off limits. The smallest cut or injury could cause me to bleed to death. This is not good news to a man who earns his living riding and training horses."
