Reasons to Read
Did you know that Ohio is leading the nation and the world in recovering from the recession?  Neither did I, until I read an article featured below that had better be the lead story in today's Plain Dealer. That good news softens the blow delivered by recent residential housing market statistics, and, depending on how you see things, on the new governor's choice of ODOT director.  In addition to those articles, you can click through to an outstanding issue of Green Builder Magazine, learn about the accomplishments of one Frantz Ward partner, and consider educational opportunities provided by upcoming seminars.

Cleveland's World Class Economic Recovery
In addition to the world's greatest symphony orchestra, art museam, and health care providers, Cleveland can now say that it has a globally-ranked economic recovery. In terms of improvement in employment and per capita income, Cleveland ranks 10th out of 50 domestic metropolitan markets and 49th out of 150 international metropolitan markets. So says a study from the London School of Economics and the Brookings Institute. Green Builder Magazine Excels
Each month, I get perhaps a dozen legal and construction-related trade magazines. One of the best is Green Builder Magazine.  I have referenced it before, usually for its reviews of green residential construction products.  This month's issue is devoted to techniques and products for sustainable residential construction and remodeling.  You do not need to be a subscriber to enjoy the articles.  Access their web site and click on their excellent viewer and you can page through their articles.
Wray to Return as ODOT Director
Governor-elect John Kasich has announced that Jerry Wray will serve as the Director of the Ohio Department of Transportation, returning to a post he held during the Voinovich and Taft administrations. Wray wasted no time calling into doubt funding for public transportation, announcing the administration's determination to eliminate the 3C rail project, and even indicating that the inner-belt bridge project will be reviewed. Residential Real Estate Market Slogs Along
A little context goes a long way, especially with real estate statistics.  Here were the numbers for October 2010 against October 2009--sales of new and used homes were down 21.7% in Northeast Ohio and down 41.9% in Cuyahoga County. So says NORMLS, as reported in The Plain Dealer.  So, before you decide that the sky has indeed fallen, check the context.  Last October's sales were driven by the tax credit that was set to expire.  This year, there is no tax credit.  So, how about some meaningful information about the market? According to the monthly market article in the Wall Street Journal, nation-wide sales figurues hit rock bottom in July after the credit expired, and August and September showed weak improvement.  The blame:  buyers are sidelined by job losses and expectations that prices will fall even more.  Ivy Zelman, my favorite real estate forecaster, believes 2011 will show some improvement.  She is usually on the bearish side of things, so let's hope she is right.
