Dianna Kielian, Foundation Interim President

Dear Friends of Franciscan Foundation,

This time of year I am reminded of the words of St. Paul to the people of Phillipi, " Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy---think about such things."  (Philippians 4:8). Your friendship, generosity, dedication and commitment to the Franciscan Foundation is noble, admirable and praiseworthy.  We thank you.

In January, Douglas Clerget, a good friend and dedicated servant of our Franciscan Community, left this world to join his Creator in heaven. Doug and his wife, Faye, have been long time generous supporters of St. Francis Hospital and Franciscan Health System.  Among the couple's most notable accomplishments was leading the efforts to build a hospital in Federal Way.  Twenty-five years ago on May 6, St. Francis opened its doors to serve the people of Federal Way and the surrounding communities.  Together, Doug and Faye have established two scholarship endowments to encourage and support St. Francis employees in higher education.  Doug also served many years as a trustee of the Franciscan Foundation Board of Directors.  He will always be remembered for his wisdom, insights, historical memory and infectious smile. We love and miss you Doug!

Other noble, admirable and praiseworthy happenings at the Foundation is the generosity of all attendees at the 2nd Annual Hospice & Palliative Care Luncheon in March, who contributed over $77,000 for hospice programs and comfort therapies. In addition, our Corporate and Foundation Giving department secured $126,287 from the Susan G. Komen Foundation and $5,000 from Greater Tacoma Community Foundation for our Breast Cancer Navigator Program.

As always, you are important and vital threads to this tapestry called Franciscan Foundation.  It is through your generosity of heart and spirit that we are able to continue the healing ministry in the communities we serve.  You are admirable and praiseworthy.

With grateful heart,

 Dianna Kielian

The Foundation Launches $350,000 Campaign to Help St. Anthony Hospital Secure a New Home for Joint Camp

Joint Camp is for patients who are undergoing surgery to replace hip or knee joints.  This unique program removes the mystery from joint replacement surgery by enabling small groups of patients to go through the process together from pre-surgical education and surgery, to recovery, rehabilitation and discharge.  By involving patients and their families (or "coaches") in the joint replacement process from the beginning, surgery and rehabilitation become a more positive and successful experience.

St. Anthony Hospital's largest surgical population has become joint replacement patients.  In keeping with Franciscan Health System's commitment to meet the community's growing needs, the hospital is now tasked with effectively accommodating this orthopedic program.  With its specialized rehabilitation equipment, Joint Camp needs its own dedicated space, which will improve patient outcomes and allow staff to function more efficiently.  Franciscan has approved the architectural plan for the remodel of the available space and has agreed to a cost proposal.

For more information (including a case statement and budget details) or to learn how you can financially support this important initiative, please contact the Franciscan Foundation's David Snow at 253-857-1432 or [email protected].

ECF logoFranciscan Hospice & Palliative Care receives $30,000 Grant

The Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound has awarded a $30,180 grant to Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care.  The grant will pay for two Verathon Bladder Scanners to improve care for hospice patients.

The new bladder scanners will prevent unnecessary catheterizations, decreasing hospice patients' discomfort and medical complications, and save time and money.  Bladder scans can also detect a bladder obstruction, which enables improved clinical care planning for optimal treatment and quality of life.

"We are truly grateful for the generous support the Employees Community Fund has provided to Franciscan Hospice over the years," said Dianna Kielian, interim president of the Franciscan Foundation. "This gift from the Boeing employees will directly benefit hundreds of the terminally ill patients and their families that we serve."

A part of Franciscan Health System, Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care helps people with advanced illness live each day with comfort and meaning. An experienced team works closely with patients, their families, and their physicians to identify and meet physiological, psychological, spiritual and practical needs with compassion and respect. Treatment focuses on effective pain management, symptom control and the quality of remaining life.

As the largest, most comprehensive end of life care provider in Washington, Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care served nearly 3,400 patients last year. This includes 2,735 patients served in their homes and 644 Hospice House patients.

The Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound (ECF) is an employee-owned and managed giving program. ECF funding enables agencies to purchase equipment, renovate their facilities and create new programs that directly help their clients and strengthen our communities. Since 1995, the Employees Community Fund has funded $185,150 in direct grants to support Franciscan Foundation.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure supports

Franciscan Breast Cancer Navigator Program

Puget Sound Affiliate awards $126,287 for service

that benefits medically underserved women

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Puget Sound Affiliate has awarded a grant totaling $126,287 to support the Franciscan Health System's Breast Cancer Navigator program which benefits medically underserved minority women.

The award-winning breast cancer navigator service has been provided in partnership with the Korean Women's Association since 2005. It has served more than 19,000 medically underserved minority women in Pierce and Awardsouth King counties who face cultural, language and socioeconomic barriers to receiving necessary health services, including screening mammograms. Many of these women are destitute to the point of needing food, transportation, and help purchasing medicines or meeting other basic needs.

"Normally, these women would never get a mammogram unless they have serious breast cancer symptoms," said Tricia Sinek, manager of the Franciscan Community Cancer Program. "At that point in the disease, their chance of surviving is much lower."

Early detection of breast cancer through yearly screening mammograms increases the chance that the disease can be treated successfully. Unfortunately, many women within minority populations lack access to screenings and treatment.

The Franciscan Breast Cancer Navigator program strives to overcome these hurdles by offering culturally sensitive, language-appropriate education with one-on-one personal support. Female navigators go to churches, private homes, businesses and other community venues to teach women about breast cancer. The navigators also help women receive recommended mammograms at facilities such as the Carol Milgard Breast Center in Tacoma. Women diagnosed with breast cancer are offered assistance in accessing medical care, and they receive practical and emotional support for managing the disease.

This is the eighth consecutive year that Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Puget Sound Affiliate, has awarded a grant to Franciscan to support the breast cancer navigator program. In 2011, the program received $123,870 from the Komen organization.

"As a non-profit organization with a mission to create healthier communities, we are grateful to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Puget Sound Affiliate, for its generous support of our health care ministry," said Dianna Kielian, interim president of the Franciscan Foundation.

The Franciscan Breast Cancer Navigator program received the Outstanding Community Service Award from Susan G. Komen for the Cure in January 2012, and a Healthcare Champion Award from the Pierce County Business Examiner in 2009.

Ways To Give

 A Donor's Legacy

Veronica Ayers
Mrs. Veronica Ayers

The Ayres recently took out a gift annuity to help Franciscan Health System with its mission of creating healthier communities and quality healthcare for all. Veronica says, "I wanted to give to a Catholic organization that was doing good work here in America".

Veronica Ayres was born in the pre-WWII days of Wimbledon, England, she grew up in a large Catholic family. After the war she worked as a secretary in London while attending college in the evening. She then worked in Australia and New Zealand for two years where she traveled extensively.

During a layover on her way home to England, Veronica met a couple who lived in San Francisco. They convinced her to remain in the USA for awhile, and while she was unsure of what to do, she says, "I learned years before then that one should pray about a situation then leave the rest to God; it works well".

She decided to stay in California, where she met her husband, Arthur, and together they worked and lived in various parts of America. They continued to travel and often took extensive train journeys, both in America and Europe, giving them the opportunity to meet people and learn about different lifestyles.

Veronica recently completed her first book, "Journal of a Wednesday Child", which chronicles her life and travels. By reading her book, her hope is that people will be inspired to venture forth, even "on a shoe string", to see how other people in the world live.

Veronica and Arthur wanted to contribute and felt their gift could inspire others about our mission of life-giving compassion care and medical excellence.  Their legacy will help Franciscan continue serving all who turn to us in need.
