FRANCISCAN HEALTH SYSTEM

Advanced Medicine,
 Trusted Care

Jon Flora, President
Welcome,

Despite our quirky Northwest weather, I hope you've had a good summer.  In the last several months, the Franciscan Foundation has joined with our Franciscan Health System colleagues in the celebration of some notable successes as we also prepare for what is surely an unknown future in health care.  The ways in which Franciscan Health System provides quality health care are changing, meaning that change will almost certainly come to this charitable foundation, too.

Over the last two years, we have all witnessed monumental economic struggles, heartache in our community, and seeminly endless stories of struggle.  And, we seem to be faced with questioning virtually everything we do.

Throughout it all, I have been amazed and gratified by shining examples of generosity and servant leadership by the 8,100 employees of the Franciscan Health System.  I hear regularly from people in our communities about positive experiences in our hospitals and clinics.  And, they almost always end their comments with "Franciscan Health System is different."

Please take a few minutes to read about why we're different.  You'll come to the same conclusion I have.  It's our people and our mission.  Together with the generosity of our community of donors, we have every reason to view the future with optimisim.

Thank you for your continuing commitment to the Franciscan Foundation and the Franciscan Health System.

 Sincerely,

Jon Flora
President

St. Anthony Statue Presented to the Sisters of St. Francis
Sr. Jude Connelly and Jon Flora
SAH Anniversary

The Campaign for St. Anthony Hospital was a high point for the Foundation generating more than $16 million for this new facility.  A special part of this success story was the inclusion of commissioned art in and around the hospital's healing environment.

Over the course of the Campaign for St. Anthony's more than $550,000 was given to acquire an exceptional art collection created by Northwest artists.  The St. Anthony's art collection includes paintings, sculptures, a rare Willits canoe, and the crown jewel - the sculpture of St. Anthony in the hospital lobby.

The bronze St. Anthony was sculpted by local artist, Mardie Rees, and cast in a Tacoma foundry.    This remarkable work was made possible by a generous gift from the Dan and Pat Nelson of Gig Harbor.

On the occasion of the hospital's first anniversary, a replica of the statue was presented to our Sisters of St. Francis in appreciation for all they have done over more than a century to serve the needs of the South Sound communities.   The replica is on permanent display at St. Ann's Convent.

For more information on the St. Anthony art collection, please contact the Foundation at 253-428-8411.
St. Clare Hospital Emergency Department
Campaign Reaches $1.2 million goal!

Last year there were more than 50,000 visits to the St. Clare Hospital Emergency Department. This increase of almost 10 percent over the prior two years was testing the limits of the department's capacity. To remedy this situation, the Franciscan Foundation launched a $1.2 million capital campaign to remodel the department.

The campaign funded the building of an additional triage room, so patients are assessed faster and treated sooner. The remodel also included: replacing curtains in the triage area with walls and doors so patients have more privacy; installing a pneumatic tube system for quickly sending prescriptions and supplies to and from the department; expanding the security office and locating it in a more central area; and updating the waiting room to make it more comfortable.

The campaign committee was co-chaired by Lakewood residents Toby Murray and Jamie Murray, and included Maggie Baker, Zari Semerdjian, and Leon Titus, III. Major contributors included Eva R. McLean, the Murray Families, Northwest Emergency Physicians of TeamHealth, Gary E. Milgard Family Foundation, Philip and Sally Hayes, Darrell and Anne Jesse, Gus and Eleanor Rumpf, and Michael A. and Mary Jo Tucci.

"There are many worthy causes that deserve attention. We felt this remodel was at the top of the list for people like us that live in the greater Lakewood area," remarked Toby and Jamie. "Sooner or later, a family member or someone close to you will benefit from this improved facility and the special people who work there. We take great pride and satisfaction in knowing our committee played a vital role in making it happen."

The Campaign for Enumclaw Regional Hospital Reaches the Half-way Point!

Thanks to generous contributions from the Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation, Enumclaw Insurance Group, and the Franciscan Cornerstone Club, the Campaign for Enumclaw Hospital has passed the $1 million mark heading toward a goal of $2 million.  The $600,000 commitment from Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation was recognized at a recent check presentation.

A brick campaign is currently under way offering engraved Wilkeson Stone pavers for $250 each.  The pavers will be installed in the new hospital healing garden and offer a great way to recognize special people, remember a loved one, or simply to have your own little piece of immortality.  To purchase a  paver online click here or call Jackie Madill at  (253) 740-9558.

All money raised through the campaign will help with the purchase of equipment, art, and other needs of the Enumclaw's newest community asset.

Thank You  Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation!

St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary

As our newest hospital joined the Franciscan Health System family, so too has a merry band of women in Gig Harbor who are focused on serving the hospital and community.  Althought the St. Anthony Auxiliary has been in existence for about two years, it really kicked into high gear when the facility opened.  Several of its members give tours of the hospital, some volunteer in the gift shop, and all came together to mount their first major fundraiser - St. Anthony Hospital Waterside Brunch held on February 2nd at Anthony's Restaurant in the Harbor.  At the end of  three hours, the Auxiliary had raised more than $20,000.  These funds were used to purchase a "LiteGait", a piece of equipment that aides in physical therapy for many of our patients.  We are proud of and grateful to the Auxiliary for this outstanding first effort!  For everyone at St. Anthony Hospital, the Foundation, and the Franciscan Health System, I want to offer my thanks to the St. Anthony Auxiliary for a job well done and ask you to mark down February 5, 2011 for the 2nd Annual St. Anthony Hospital Waterside Brunch!
 Humanitarian of the Year Award

Northwest Physicians of TeamHealth and The Sisters of St. Francis
HOYA 2010

The 2010 St. Francis Humanitarian of the Year Award, presented by the Sisters of St. Francis and the Franciscan Foundation,  was awarded to Northwest Emergency Physicians of TeamHealth for their long history of outreach to the South Sound community and partnership with the Franciscan Health System.  NEP physicians are most well known for their volunteer services in neighborhood clinics helping those in serious need.  They are also quietly and humbly involved in a variety of outreach efforts that give true meaning to "Walking in another person's shoes."

On this occasion, the Franciscan Foundation recognized Northwest Emergency Physicians of TeamHealth, along with several previous recipients in attendance, with a lapel pin created in the likeness of sandals worn by St. Francis of Assisi.

The award was presented at a luncheon celebration on June 24, 2010 at the Tacoma Yacht Club.

Ways To Give

St. Clare Volunteer Surprises Us!

Agnes Cambridge has been an active volunteer at St. Clare for nearly two decades.  Since retiring from a teaching career, she has invested more than 35,000 hours of her time helping the hospital serve the Lakewood community.   Her involvement actually goes back to the original Lakewood General Hospital meaning one thing - she can tell more stories about the hospital than anyone!

Beyond her involvement, her husband Richard also volunteers at St. Clare and has given more than 16,000 hours of his time.

Recently, Agnes' commitment to St. Clare went a new direction when she gave $150,000 to help upgrade the Admitting area of the hospital lobby.  A full remodel of the lobby will happen soon, and when completed, the Agnes and Richard Cambridge Admitting Center will be the first thing seen by visitors to St. Clare Hospital.

We offer our thanks to Agnes and Richard Cambridge for their generosity and commitment to St. Clare Hospital.
