 haven network

The Haven Network

A terminal or otherwise adverse diagnosis for an unborn child brings a traumatic end to the hopeful expectations that typify most pregnancies.  Shortly after pronouncing such a diagnosis, a physician will frequently include termination among the options of treatment.  To read Scriptures like Psalm 139, the baby in the womb is indeed of value to God, and not to be treated without regard.  Unfortunately, amid the emotional trauma that comes with an adverse prenatal diagnosis, the baby's family is often unprepared to deal with the eventual outcome of the pregnancy.

The Haven Network for Perinatal Death & Bereavement is a ministry that provides support to the families who carry their terminal pregnancies to term and deliver the baby.  This support includes preparations for the delivery including development of a birthing plan to be implemented by the labor & delivery staff, and grief support following the death of the baby.  In effect, The Haven Network serves as the only perinatal hospice and bereavement center in northern Illinois.

Once again, we have the opportunity to be the audience for the Kids Music and Drama Kamp dress rehearsal.  We will meet in Fellowship Hall for our lunch (free will donation) and then go to the sanctuary for the presentation.  The theme this year is Joseph and the Dream Team Xtreme.  It is so much easier to preparefor the eventual program in front of an audience, so let's help these young people by being a responsive audience at this final
rehearsal
. Invite some of your friends to come along.

This time we need you to call the church office with your reservations:  815.623.6545.  THANKS

Remember when we said we were making 550 pairs of straps for backpacks for GlobalFingerprints that were to be completed at Challenge 2010 (June 28-July 3).  Well, we finished our part and here's the report received from EFCA sources:
. . . the GlobalFingerprints staff partnered with ReachStudents to work on The Red Backpack Project at the Challenge 2010 Conference. One of the ministry outreach opportunities for students was to make 5,000 Red Backpacks to send to every GlobalFingerprints orphan in the Congo, the children in the launch site of India, and to children orphaned in Haiti's earthquake. Imagine a huge conference room set up like a small factory setting with 200 sewing machines disbursed among four working lines with ten different work stations in each line, then add 300 teenagers who had not sewn before and you realize how much help the Lord gave them to allow the backpacks to be finished! There was a huge push on the last day of the conference to finish so that all 5,000 are now ready to be filled for the neediest children.

Shataye Paulson, right, joins students at the Greater Columbus (Ohio) Convention Center sewing together backpacks for Haitian children this week. Paulson, 17, who left Ethiopia three years ago and now lives in Texas, said a backpack is "a big thing" for a poor youth hungry for an education.

Our August workdays are Tuesday, August 3, and Tuesday, August 17, from 8-12 in Drake Hall.  Do plan to join us.  We'll be tying quilts, sewing bandages, cutting out dresses for the dress kits, cutting materials for receiving blankets and quilt tops, etc.  Just bring your scissors and come enjoy some fellowship with other willing workers for Jesus.

Our needs this month include:
Blankets & mattress pads for inside of quilts (do watch the garage sales)

Lightweight flannel for receiving blankets in 1-yd. increments

Rickrack, bias tape, thread, small scissors, pins and needles to include in the dress kits

Gallon storage bags (ziploc style)

Sheets, sheets, & more sheets for quilt backs (flat, any color)

Campbell's labels for education (for local schools)

We look forward to seeing many workers make a difference in God's kingdom as we try to supply the needs of those in Haiti, Congo, Tanzania, Bosnia, Romania, Mongolia, and more.  Won't you join our efforts in helping the poor wherever God sends us.

A TASTE OF HOPE the morning of  Sunday, Sept 19

A TASTE OF HOPE
is our annual Ministry Fair that takes place during and between both services in the Fellowship Hall. ABF's are cancelled for that day to give everyone an opportunity to check out  the various minitries of Hope Free Church. Find out how YOU can be more involved and connected with the body!!

One of the more common reasons people leave churches is because they do not feel a sense of connectedness or involvement in the church.  A TASTE OF HOPE   is designed to answer your questions about participating in a ministry or being involved in some way in the body life of the church. We are a body and we need one another. How are you connected here at Hope? Mark your calendars and make  A TASTE OF HOPE
a priority.

Bump 3

backtotopofpageA heartfelt "Thank you" to our Hope Church family for the tremendous privilege and blessing it was to do "Da BUMP" 2010 - what an awesome opportunity to see Jesus working in the lives of those we served and in our student ministry.

The Holy Spirit has been working in Freeway and Crossroads student ministries and here are some of the most important highlights leading up to this year's BUMP:

Conviction in the lives of our students (and team leaders)

        Renewed hunger for God's Word

Heart change toward who God is and who we are

        Heart change toward each other

Renewed commitment to our faith community and Hope Student  Ministries

Some specifics include: a more earnest desire to follow Jesus with several students desiring baptism as a result, a greater trust in Jesus and a heightened interest in discovering truth.

Bump 2     As a result of BUMP, our students were blessed and were a blessing to the people of  Riverside EFCA. The Holy Spirit had a significant impact on their community with the children that attended VBS, the record number of teens we had participating in the basketball camp, prayer and the campfire. We even had the privilege of leading a young couple to Christ Sunday morning in the midst of the assembly... it was their second Sunday at Riverside!

As always there are far too many to thank in this panel for their help - we will be in thanksgiving for all of you in the days ahead: the parents, the BUMP team, the children's ministries, Hope staff, Riverside staff, BUMP staff, etc. - God is amazing!

Thank You

Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers that the church family sent me!  I absolutely love them and they really made my day.  Thank you very much!!   Frances Moore

Thank you for the plant, cards, thoughts, and prayers for our family after the loss of Mark's dad.  It certainly helped us get through a difficult time. It's a good feeling to know there are a group of loving Christians behind you to lift you up during trying times. Mark's dad was a believer and we know he's in a better place now. He suffered a severe stroke about 6 years ago and never fully recovered.   In Christ, The Tichgelaar Family- Mark, Candy, and the boys.

Biblical Virtue to pray for our Kids - Getting ready to go back to school can be a very scary time for many children, pray that they will grow in Courage. "Father, May my children always be strong and courageous in their character and in their actions" (Duet 31:6)

Nursery:  If you are 14 or older (or will be soon) and want to work in the nursery we would be thrilled to have your help!  With the college age kids heading out of town we are losing several good workers and we need to replace them.  Call Tara Minger at 815-270-0328 or Vera at 815-623-6545 to volunteer.

Preschool
Preschool is growing by leaps and bounds! We are so excited when we see our 2 year olds come from the nursery. They feel so big and special! Stop by our Preschool wing - check out our new coat hooks and maybe even pick up a donation card - every little bit helps. With Fall and the new school year right around the corner, keep an eye out for information on when we move up to the next age group. Thank you for supporting our teachers!!

Thinking of how to have JOY in your life?!? Preschool is in immediate need of a permanent teacher for the 2nd service 2 year old group. We are also in need of a temporary teacher during the fall season (4 months) for the 2nd service 3 year old group. Those individuals who are members and interested, please call Chris Fosler @ 815-636-9428.

Sunday School
anderson gardens longThis has been a fun summer for the kids in Sunday School and we hope you have heard all about it!  Each week the kids have been taking a journey called Metamorphosis.  Through key verses in Proverbs, they are learning how God transforms our hearts, just as a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.  We have had a great group of volunteers each week teaching the lesson through drama and games.  Praise to God to see so many young faces each week!
Parents, just a reminder that you may check your children into Sunday School at 8:45am each week.  Our classes are in need of snacks, so if you would be willing to donate, check the board for ideas when you check in the children Sunday morning.
Believe it or not, we are planning for fall.  This year, we have some terrific teachers returning to lead the children and are also in need of two people to teach K-1st grade.  There is a curriculum to follow, all the supplies you need, and flexibility so you can be creative.  Please contact Vera Juhlin if you are interested.
Thank you all for praying and helping our children.
Love, In Jesus' Name,  Jane Kane

Worship for Kids is in need of a church member to help with teaching elementary age kids during second service this fall.  We are very flexible and can work around schedules.  Call Candy Tichgelaar at 815-540-9238 or Vera at 815-623-6545 to volunteer.

Timber-Lee Scholarship Thank You:
Dear Hope Church, Thanks a million for the scholarship to camp Timber-lee! I had so much fun at camp ~~ from swimming to rock climbing. I kept thinking how blessed I was to be there. The last night at camp they had an open microphone ~~ you could go up and say how God has been involved in your life. God gave me the courage to go up and say how God helped me. When I was  little God saved my life several times in that I had a rare disease called Kowasaki disorder. Before the doctors performed the possible life changing procedure they said my parents had five minutes to say goodbye in case I did not make it. My mom believes that God saved me for a great reason! Thank you, Alek Ivancich

BIBLICAL PORTRAIT OF MARRIAGE
Mondays during AWANA - 6:30-8:15 pm
Facilitators - Brad & Valerie Schreiner
12 Weeks starting September 13.

Biblical Portrait of Mariage
God designed marriage to be between a man and a woman, for better, for worse, for life. A marriage is a relationship, a partnership, a companionship, designed and created by God. But marriages are not without problems. God wants the partnership of your marriage to be the solution to your problems.
In a biblical Portrait of Marriage, Dr. Bruce Wilkinson outlines six parnership principles and six problem-solving strategies - enought to move any marriage from bland to grand!
The first six sessions cover the partnership aspect of marriage: the roles and responsibilities of husbands, wives, and couples. The second six sessions tackle the toughest problems of marriage: in-laws, money, sex, romance, communications, and loyalty.
With this series, your marriage won't become perfect -but it will become a more loving, problem-solving partnership! You'll have painted A Biblical Portrait of Marriage!

The Great Adventure explores a man and his world beyond the everyday.great adventure The 20-session study puts the roof on the house of masculinity and creates a vision for a man's future and destiny. This study will help men rediscover the adventure in life through a greater understanding of who they are. Men will uncover the uniqueness they have as a man and discover a satisfying life focus.  It will challenge men to consider several important questions they are continually asking themselves:
   "Who Am I?"
"What are my life dreams ?"
"Do I have courage to pursue those dreams?"
It also introduces a tool, Your Unique Design, to help men better understand their makeup, who they are, what their natural strengths are and the types of environments in which they thrive.
Never has another manhood curriculum challenged men to live life to the fullest like The Great Adventure . It will take them on a journey that leads to significant personal discoveries about who they are and where they are going in life.

 financial peace
Financial Peace University consists of a 13-week video curriculum taught by financial expert Dave Ramsey, that incorporates small-group discussions to encourage accountability and discipleship. Most financial programs are boring, with confusing information and monotonous instructors.
Financial Peace is very different! It is highly entertaining for everyone, with a unique combination of humor, informative financial advice, and biblical messages. The course is easy to facilitate and there is no certification required to become one of our volunteer coordinators. Dave does all the teaching via video with volunteer coordinators leading the discussions after the videos.
Through two classes held here, families of Hope have saved or paid off debt of nearly $300,000. Have you missed out on this so far? Set aside time now for the upcoming class.

Where do you turn when you need to replace a fuse, cook dinner, eradicate ants, or soothe your child's upset stomach? If you are like many others, you have a shelf full of "how-to" books to supplement your ownanderson gardens long knowledge and experience.

Now it's time to add Proverbs to that shelf! Proverbs is the Bible's own how-to manual. The wisdom contained in its practical and simple instructions will help you to be successful and prosperous in your work, your dealings with family and friends, and your relationship with God. As William Mouser opens up this treasure-store of godly guidance, you'll wonder how you ever survived without it

Multigenerational meets during 10:30 service in the fellowship Hall
 Taught by: Chuck Jones

In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview.1

anderson gardens long  Because of this, today's believers live very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy and we begin to wonder what life's ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation.

To counter this slide within the body of Christ, we are launching one of the most ambitious and powerful projects in the history of our ministry-Focus on the Family's The Truth Project.

The Truth Project is a DVD-based group curriculum taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This home study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.

We believe this one project represents the possibility for exponential change within the body of Christ, as we expect that thousands will be transformed by this curriculum. As it has been throughout history, God continues to call ordinary people to make an eternal difference in our world.

Multigenerational meets during 9 am service in the Fellowship Hall

As believers, the world will draw conclusions about Jesus based on our behavior. So how can we demonstrate love, and honor truth, in all situations-particularly the stickier ones? Using examples from the author's own "sticky" life, this study looks for the answer in the tenuous but interdependent relationship of two character attributes fully possessed by Christ: Grace and Truth.
Grace, Truth     Jesus' heart was filled with 100 percent grace and 100 percent truth-not 50 percent of each. According to Alcorn, then, it is only by demonstrating a balance of grace and truth that we can accurately show Christ's character to the world. But he adds, "Grace isn't good manners, and by truth I don't just mean speaking honestly."
Through this short-term study, then, Christians will come to a deeper understanding of each attribute, their co-existence, and practical ways that we can model them both in full and equal measure.
