Thank You

Dear Friends at Hope Church,  Thank you so much for the beautiful plant in memory of Ralph Snyder.  It is beautiful.  We also appreciate all your outpouring of love and support.  The Ralph Snyder Family

Dear Hope Free Family, Thank you so much to those who sent flowers and words of encouragement following Portia's passing into glory. The food that many of you sent for the luncheon following the funeral helped to make the celebration of her life as she wanted it to be - a celebration with much laughter and glorifying God. Thank you for the love extended to our family, The family of Portia Noble.

To Our Hope Church Family, Thank you for the flowers, cards, and loving comments of sympathy after Doug's father's death. We are blessed to belong to a church that cares about each other. Love, Doug & Vera Juhlin

WHITE CROSS UPDATE

Sharon Vinson & Connie Ruden, Coordinators

HELP!!  HELP!!  With the recent earthquake disaster in Haiti, TouchGlobal Director Jim Snyder has asked our group to make a special effort to increase donations of blankets, quilts, and Touch of Love Care Kits ASAP.  These care kits include only the following items in a gallon Ziploc bag:  toothbrush, toothpaste (large size/screw top only), large bar of soap, 2 pens and 2 #2 unsharpened pencils, small pencil sharpener, small notebook (less than 5 x 7), 4 balloons, and a hand towel).  All items are to be removed from packaging except the toothbrush.  We will deliver the kits to  the Rockford warehouse for immediate shipment to Haiti.  After the need lessens, any kits will be sent to orphans in the Congo.

In addition, on the EFCA Crisis Response blog, we are urged to get our passports in order so that we can join teams of workers who will be needed for many months to come.  We are urged to be clothed with compassion for anyone in need (Col. 3:12).

Won't you help us help others?  Our upcoming workdays are Tuesday, February 2, and Saturday, February 20, from 8-12 in Drake Hall.  Do plan to join us.  We'll be packing care kits, tying quilts, cutting out dresses for the dress kits, cutting materials for receiving blankets and quilt tops, etc.  Just bring your scissors and come enjoy some fellowship with other willing workers for Jesus.

Our needs this month include:

~Any items for care kits (see above)

~Blankets & mattress pads for inside of quilts Lightweight flannel for receiving blankets (1 yd = 1 blanket)

~Rickrack, bias tape, thread, small scissors, pins & needles to include in the dress kits Campbell's labels for education for local schools

~Gallon storage bags (ziploc for dress or care kits and layettes)

~Sheets, sheets, & more sheets for quilt backs (flat, any color)

We look forward to seeing many workers make a difference in God's kingdom as we try to supply for the needs of those in Haiti, Congo, Tanzania, Bosnia, Romania, Mongolia, and more.  We did deliver three quilts to Rockford Rescue Mission and four toddler-sized quilts to Stateline Pregnancy Center recently in our ongoing attempt to assist local ministries as the need arises.

Pastor Ken

Helping the Unemployed Find a Job

 By Pastor Ken Bergstedt

Mo there were just a few of us, maybe five or six. Months have gone by since I first met with Brenda Warren, who had an idea to start up a support group for people who have been laid off or lost their job.  We started meeting on Monday mornings at 8:30 in the Fireside Room.  Initially there were just a few of us, maybe five or six.  Brenda led the group in discussing some important issues the unemployed would be facing.  She also invited two different guest speakers to come in and discuss job hunting and building résumés from their professional perspective.

What can those of you who are not looking for work do to help those who are looking? First, you can pray for them.  Some have told us about being let go, and their names are listed each week in the email prayer list. When you pray, ask God to guide them to job openings.  This is not as simple as it used to be. More on that later. Pray too that they will not become discouraged. Some have been off work for over a year and have not had one interview, let alone be hired. Those rejection letters can pile up and make a person question their worth. Pray that
God would look with favor on them and direct employers to take notice of these résumés in particular.

Second, you can help by listening. There are so many who are out of work that getting a job is not a matter of just being willing to work. In the past, you may have looked with disfavor at someone when you found out they were not working, assuming that it was their choice, ie. that they were lazy and would be working if they really wanted to. If you meet someone these days who is unemployed, seek to encourage them.  Ask them if they have been able to put their résumé out lately, and where. If they say they have an interview scheduled, promise to pray for them. Then ask them the next time you see them how the interview went. The unemployed need to know that others care about them.

Third, understand that in this economy, finding a job is all about networking. One of the goals of our "Career Support Ministry" is to network together in learning about job postings. One Monday, we came together and someone had heard their neighbor talk about a job opening in Rockton. One in our group went to apply, only to find out that the position had been filled already. The company did not post the job anywhere! They simply told their employees about it who then spread the word to their neighbors. In our group, the individuals try to understand the kind of work each is looking for, and if they see a posting on some website, they contact me and I pass it along quickly. First EFC Rockford also has a support group meeting and they have passed along a networking possibility to us too. If you know that someone at work is retiring, we assume the company will be filling the position. Tell us about it. If a business you do business with is expanding and hiring more workers, tell us. Look at it this way. The want ads are not the source for jobs like they used to be. So if 400 or so adults at HOPE EFC keep their ears open, that multiplies the possibilities for helping these who are looking for work to get hired.

Fourth, there is good news. Brenda isn't leading the group anymore, because she got a job! Nine others also no longer attend because they have either gotten a job or have gone back to school to get more training or to explore a whole new career. I asked the group and they told me that it is encouraging when they hear that someone got hired. So an empty chair around the tables is good news.

Fifth, encourage those who are out of work to come on Monday mornings. The group is not large and overwhelming. Those who come understand the complicated process of jumping through the hoops to collect for unemployment. They understand the frustrations of submitting résumés and never hearing from the company. But the really good thing is that we keep reminding each other that God is still on the throne, and He will see each and every one of His children through. Even if a thousand apply for one job opening, if God wants a particular person to get the job, He will help it happen. We are encouraged to trust God when worry and doubt creep in. But that is the same message for all of us, whether we are working or not.

Abraham's servant reported back: "saying, "Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master's relatives."  {Genesis 24:27 NIV}The servant got his orders and took off on the journey. While he was on the journey, God led him to be in the right place at the right time so that he would meet God's choice for Isaac.  We are asking you to help those who are seeking God's leading, and especially adding more eyes and ears to discover businesses that are hiring and passing that information along. Thanks in advance for helping make the journey a success.

anderson gardens long Encore - Seniors of Hope

Senior Saints Luncheon, February 9th at 12 Noon.

The movie title was "Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs."  Well once again there is a pretty good chance for meatballs, along with some other delicacies.  Be a good egg and call and make your reservation with Betty Alexander (815.623.2336), and PLEASE give her your phone number so we can call in case of inclement weather (it is still winter in Illinois).  We have great fellowship and it is your opportunity to meet other seniors from the stateline area.

Pastor Ken will give the devotions and the Goldenaires directed by Gene Singletary will be singing.

anderson gardens longIron Sharpens Iron is a one-day equipping conference for men and local churches. The conference offers two keynote speakers, leaders in ministry to men, and sixteen different seminars specifically for men on issues relevant to men.

Why should I go to Iron Sharpens Iron?

Equip  Iron Sharpens Iron is an equipping conference for men. We not only seek to build up men as individuals, but we strive to help and support the local church by providing seminars to equip men to minister to other men in their own local church. Our main objective is to support you, the local church pastor and your men's ministry leaders.

Growth This conference is not just for the leaders. You just never know who God is incubating a new ministry in. You may have a man sitting in the wings right now that God is preparing to use to minister to other men. Don't limit your men's ministry leadership to just a few. Bring as many men as you can and help them to spread their ministry wings.

Fellowship We encourage you to bring any and all of your men to ISI. It is a great time for your men to experience being with other Christian men from other churches in your community and region, fostering unity in the Body of Christ.

Worship During the plenary sessions, ISI provides a worshipful atmosphere where any man can engage the risen and living God. The music is masculine, engaging, and quality.

Cost = $47.00 which includes lunch (Students = $20.00)

Please begin praying about two things:  1) Who does God want you to invite to hear the plan of salvation and 2) Is God asking you to be a part of this community outreach and if so, in what area?

SINGLES Support Group

Have you ever found yourself lonely, overwhelmed with caring for a car, home, or apartment, or craving someone to talk to?  If so, a new support for older singles could provide the answer to your situation.

A new support group recently was formed to fill a growing need in Hope Free's congregation-helping curb loneliness for older singles.  Our purposes include providing connections to help with problems, encouraging others, doing things together, supplying spiritual growth opportunities and fun and fellowship.

The group is planning another get-together on Saturday, February 13, at 12:30 pm in the Fireside Room.  After devotions, we'll have a light lunch, enjoy fellowship, and play board games until 4 pm or so.  Volunteers will prepare the lunch items, and a freewill donation can be made to help defray the food costs.   If you are able to participate, please RSVP to Sharon Vinson @ 815-623-6857 or sjvins@juno.com.
