Going Paperless
It's SO Easy Being Green!
Being one of the top environmental laboratories in Southern California means one very important thing - ESB is mean on green! Our love for the environment doesn't just stem from our analytical testing of everything from drinking water to hazardous waste - it also comes from devotion to our community, and yours. Here at ESB we decided it was time to implement paperless reports to save trees and reduce waste and on January 1st, 2011 our go green, paperless initiative went into full force.
The objective was to convert our standard method of report delivery from printing and mailing to emailing and online access. Of course, upon request hard copies of reports can still be sent to clients who require them. However, to reduce waste and mitigate our impact on the environment, the goal is to get as close to 100% participation in the paperless initiative as possible. In the last year, our paper use was equivalent to an entire tree and more than 4 whole trees were used for ESB final reports in the last decade. Since we began our paperless program we have cut our paper use in half. Less reports being mailed out means less mail transportation, and less mail transportation means less car exhaust and pollutants in our atmosphere. We are proud to announce that currently 90% of our clients are participating in the paper reduction initiative!
ESB would like to thank all of you for supporting our conservation efforts - cutting our paper use in half has allowed us to reduce our ecological footprint significantly. Besides being green, accessing your reports is easier than ever before. When clients register for online results they gain access to an online record that allows them to track their work and view results with the click of a button. With these electronic deliverable capabilities our project managers can provide customized reports to meet your specific needs, data storage for up to one year, as well as a variety of document formats.
For more information about our data deliverables please contact your Project Manager. For more information about our paperless initiative please contact Cathy Iijima at 951-653-3351 ext 235 or email her at ciijima@babcocklabs.com. |

ESB Lab Tip
Keeping Samples Cool
To ensure the most accurate results for your samples, here are a few tips on how to keep them at the right temperatures during collection and delivery!
- Bacti and non-metal aqueous chem samples must be brought to the lab on ice.
- Wet ice will keep your samples cooler than blue ice. If you choose to use wet ice, make sure sample containers are not submerged in melting ice water. Placing bottles in plastic bags works well to avoid possible cross contamination.
- Do not leave your samples in a cooler for long periods of time. Instead, bring them into the lab as soon as possible. Also, try not to leave your coolers in direct sunlight.
- If shipping samples to the lab, temperature sensitive samples need to be sent via overnight delivery.
Please contact your Project Manager with questions regarding sample temperature requirements or for a list of recommended sample temperatures. |

ESB Green Tip
It is no secret that for most of us there is a direct correlation between caffeine intake and the amount of work completed. If you're a caffeine fiend too, why not take it to go? Using a reusable travel mug when filling up at your favorite coffee shop instead of throwing away yet another paper cup can cut down on daily waste significantly. Plus, your barista might give you a discount for being environmentally friendly! It's a green fix to your coffee fix.
