ESB Hosts TEAM Event on Recycled Water Regulations and Public Expectations
On Thursday, June 25th, 2009 ESB hosted its 14th TEAM Event entitled, "Recycled Water: Regulatory Reality & Public Expectations." The topic (which is on many water purveyors minds these days given our current drought situation) proved to be extremely popular and required the addition of a second afternoon session. 95 participants representing 63 organizations were in attendance. Presentations were provided by Brenda Meyer, Principal Engineer from Western Municipal Water District in Riverside and Joe Walters, Recycled Water Manager at West Basin Municipal Water District in Carson. For more information about our next TEAM event tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 29th, 2009 please visit our website or join our mailing list. |

California Water Quality Monitoring Council Unveils Internet Portals to Connect Decision Makers and the Public with Water Quality Information
Sacramento- The California Water Quality Monitoring Council (Monitoring Council) is unveiling the first of several new internet portals addressing different water quality themes. The first is Is it Safe to Swim in Our Waters?
The site includes interactive maps and monitoring data that focus on swimming safety. The goal is to make this information as timely and user-friendly, as possible.
The California legislature mandated in 2006 that water quality monitoring and assessment activities be coordinated among organizations inside and outside California government, and that this information be made available to decision makers and the public via the internet. The Monitoring Council was formed in 2007 by a cooperative agreement between the Califronia Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Resources Agency for this purpose.
In conjunction with expert stake holder work groups, the Monitoring Council is bringing together water quality information from a wide variety of organizations with special expertise in swimming safety, coordinated through the Beach Water Quality Workgroup (Southern California) and the Central/Northern California Ocean and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Group. Local, state and federal agencies and non-governmental organizations have all pitched in to answer your water quality questions.
California's waters are generally open and available for recreational uses. But, there are times when those uses are unsafe because of bacterial contamination form sewage spills, urban runoff, malfuntioning septic systems, discharges from boats, and waste from other swimmers, domestic animals, marine mammals and birds. Timely and accurate beach water quality monitoring and strong pollution prevention measures are critical for protecting beachgoers from waterborne diseases.

Lab Tip of The Month
Keeping Samples Cool
Samples must be protected from contamination or temperature changes when being transported to the laboratory. Samples requiring refrigeration should be transported in a cooler with ice. If wet ice is used, place samples in Ziploc bags to avoid contamination. When utilizing a postal service, temperature sensitive samples should be sent via overnight express. During the hot summer months, it is especially important to keep your samples cool (but don't freeze them as this can affect your results).
Upon receipt at the lab, a randomly selected sample is taken from each ice chest and the temperature is recorded on the Chain of Custody or Sample Receipt Form. Clients are contacted (and must verbally authorize the lab to proceed) if samples are received at improper temperature, or if there are problems noted which could affect lab results.
If you have questions regarding sample temperature and handling requirements, please contact your Project Manager for a list of recommended sample temperatures. Or, you may view the list on our website. |

Make it a habit to think before you print: could this be read or stored online instead? When you receive unwanted catalogs, newsletters, magazines, or junk mail, request to be removed from the mailing list before you recycle the item. Make it a policy to post employee manuals and similar materials online, rather than distribute print copies. They're easier to update that way too. |
