Area high school students and teachers were honored for their hard work during the Alvin Community College Upward Bound Recognition Dinner on July 12 at the Nolan Ryan Center.

Students were recognized for their achievements in math, science, English, attendance, leadership and more.

This is the 9th year for the program at ACC.

Paige Barrera, a 2011 Upward Bound graduate, was one of the guest speakers during dinner and talked about how the program inspired her to continue her education. Barrera is now an ACC student seeking a teaching degree.

"This guided me and helped me know what I wanted to do in life," she said.

Since enrolling at ACC, Barrera has become a member of the Student Government Association.

Upward Bound seeks to motivate low-income and/or potential first-generation college students and help them develop the skills they need to complete secondary education and succeed at the postsecondary educational institution of their choice. The purpose of the program is to build confidence and self-esteem, while providing the necessary tools and guidance to foster academic success.

"Our mission is to groom them for college while they are still in high school," Upward Bound Director Regan Metoyer said.

The program was created and endorsed by the Department of Education. It also is funded by a federal grant.

The program works with Alvin ISD students.
