ACC Students Finish Spring Semester with Commencement ceremonies
Graduates receive diplomas as 2012 spring semester comes to a close
More than 300 Alvin Community College students completed their associate degree in commencement ceremonies in May.
Two hundred and eight of these graduates participated in the ACC Spring Commencement on May 15. Those graduates included 23 high school students who received their associate degree before being awarded their high school diploma.
Fifty nursing students had their pinning and graduation in a separate ceremony on May 10. The GED awarded 22 diplomas at its graduation ceremony on May 23. The Law Enforcement Academy had 36 cadets who walked the stage on May 24.

ACC Students Finish College Before High School
Dual Degree program has record number of graduates for 2012

Twenty three students finished the Alvin Community College Dual Degree program in the 2012 spring semester.
The graduates are from the high schools in Alvin, Manvel, Pearland and Dawson-Pearland.
Those finishing the dual degree program this year from Alvin High School are: Amanda Henehan, Vanessa Garcia, Stormie Alexander, Audrie Molina, Alexandria Gonzales, Mayra Rodriguez, Alejandra Pacheco, Lauren Poland, Lauren Fontenot, Natalie Earles, Brittany Miller, John Free and Danielle Medrano. The Manvel High School graduates are: Jeniece Julius, Brittney Stredic, Evelyn Uribe, Ilse Ruiz, Zachary Sargeant, Sabrina During, Marysa Johnson, Hapreet Singh and Chirag Patel. Pearland High School and Dawson High School had their first dual degree grads this year. Dawson senior Brooke McCumpsey finished her courses in December and Pearland senior Kathryn Barnett completed her classes in May.
The students started taking dual credit classes at their respective high schools and earned enough hours to receive an associate degree.
"We are very proud of this year's dual degree grads," said Alpha Trevino, academic advisor at Alvin High School.
The students obtained their associate degree before receiving their high school diploma.
There were only five dual degree graduates in 2011.

ACC Foundation Kicks Off 2012 Summer Concert Series

The Alvin Community College Foundation will start the Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on June 7 with Mary Smith and Mystique.
The R&B musical act will play in the KACC studio on the Alvin Community College campus. Their songs are a mix of old school and new school tunes that include Motown and R&B hits.
The ACC Foundation sponsors the Summer Concert Series. Funds raised from Alvin Live performances are used for ACC Broadcast Communications student training and scholarships.
Also performing this summer will be the Honky Tonk Heroes on July 12 and Shake Russel on August 2.
All performances will be in the KACC studio, K-219.

ACC Board Members Take Oath Sanchez, Swindell and DeWitt swear in for another term

Alvin Community College Regents Bel Sanchez, Doyle Swindell and James DeWitt took the oath of office for another term during a board meeting on May 22.
DeWitt fended off challenger Ted Kalivoda in the May 12 elections while Sanchez and Swindell ran unopposed.
Regents also decided to maintain officer positions. Pete Nash will remain as chairman, James DeWitt vice-chair position and Karlis Ercums will serve as secretary.
Also during the meeting, regents approved a new position for a dual credit director. The new director would work with local high schools in managing the growing number of dual credit students.
Regents approved a policy to allow serving of alcohol by civic organizations and celebrations at the the Nolan Ryan Center and the K-219 performance venue.
The board also voted 5-4 to approve advertising on the Alvin ISD Memorial Stadium scoreboard. The agreement with AIvin ISD also includes a commercial for ACC that will air during football games at the stadium.

ACC Gives Students Chance to Start College Early
Busy Bodies Kids' College offers various camps this summer
After spending the school year in the halls of an elementary school or junior high school, students ages 7-14 years have a chance this summer to get a taste of a college education.
The Alvin Community College Busy Bodies Kids' College starts its first camp this month and will have additional camps throughout the summer.

Students will have a chance to learn about finance, electronics, digital photography, engineering, writing and illustration. More courses will be added to the schedule during the summer.
Registration for the four-day camps will be open until five days before the first day of class.
The costs for the courses range between $105 and $225 for students who live within the ACC district. For those living out of the district, the courses cost $20 more.

ACC Child Development Lab School Marches to Raise Funds
Visits to ACC departments generates more than $200 in donations |

The Alvin Community College Child Development Lab students chanted and marched throughout the campus on May 24 to raise money for a national cancer research campaign.
Holding cardboard tubes filled with change, the students sought donations from ACC employees in the Enrollment Services Center, ACC Police Department, College Store and Student Center.
At the end of their march the students were able to collect $243.90 that will go to the Relay for Life campaign.
Relay for Life is a national fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society. There are several local Relay for Life events throughout the nation, including one in the Alvin-Manvel area on June 8-9.

ACC Art Department is Having a Busy Summer

The Alvin Community College Art Department will have plenty of activities for kids and parents to do this summer with workshops for pottery, photography and jewelry art.
Starting this week, the Art Department will begin teaching kids as young as 8 and their parents how to spin pottery. The workshops begin on June 9 and will be available through August 9.
In addition to the pottery workshop, the Art Department is also hosting classes in digital and traditional photography.
The film photography class will be June 4-6, June 26-28 and July 23-25 for students ages 8 to16. It will cover dark room skills, developing negatives, prints and using film. The digital art courses on June 11-12 and July 9-10 will teach students how to use photography software, animated drawings and software filters.
A jewelry-making and metalsmithing course will begin June 11 and end on July 18. The jewelry workshop focus will be on soldering and how to make repairs. It also will give quick exercises to build soldering ability.
The jewelry course is part of the ACC Art Department's Enrichment Workshop Program.

ACC Recognizes Police Week
College acknowledges sacrifices made by men and women in law enforcement
Alvin Community College had a ceremony on May 15 to honor those who have sacrificed their lives serving in law enforcement.
ACC Police Chief Andy Tacquard spoke during the ceremony about the purpose of National Police Week.
"I encourage you to pray for the families of those officers who have gone before us and also for the safety of the officers across this nation as they perform their jobs keeping us safe each day," Tacquard said. ACC cadets lowered the campus flags to half-staff and the Alvin Police Department Honor Guard fired a 21-gun salute.
ACC President Rodney Allbright helped unveil the Table of Honor, a table setting that represents the absence of a fallen officer.

ACC Softball Coach Going Pro Again

Alvin Community College Lady Dolphins softball coach Loryn Johnson will temporarily give up her clipboard as coach and put on her glove to play professional ball this summer.
Johnson, 23, of Alvin, will travel to the East Coast to play with the Carolina Diamonds, one of four teams in the National Pro Fastpitch league.
"I feel extremely blessed to continue to play the sport I love," Johnson said. "Not everyone has the opportunity to continue playing after college, so I take full advantage of playing with some of the best athletes in the country for those three months." Johnson starred at the University of Texas, where she registered the best all-time slugging percentage at .562 and is second all-time in career batting average with .349. Before coming to ACC in 2011, Johnson had served as an assistant coach in softball and track at Southwestern University and assistant coach with Round Rock Blaze, a Select Girls Fast Pitch Organization. Johnson will return to ACC in the fall to coach the Lady Dolphins for the 2013 season. Johnson led the ACC softball team to a 24-20 record in 2012. Summer Semester Begins with Welcome Week
| The Alvin Community College office of Student Activities will hand out nachos, play some horseshoes and a little ladder ball to welcome students to summer classes.
The 11-week and first 8-week summer semesters began June 4.
Welcome Week events will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Student Center.
Registration for the second, 8-week summer semester will begin on June 26 and end on July 10. Classes begin on July 12. First-time college students must attend a mandatory orientation. The next student orientation will be June 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Texas Room at the Student Center. The orientation includes information on study skills, college departments, student services, financial aid and college facilities.
