ACC Phi Theta Kappa Inducts New Members 

Honors society adds 40 students during ceremony

The Alvin Community College Phi Theta Kappa chapter inducted 40 students into the honor society in a ceremony on March 23.

 

Students in the society are those who rank in the top one percent, said Lynn Henderson, ACC lead adviser for Phi Theta Kappa.

 

"The inductees represent the best of the best," Henderson said.

 

Phi Theta Kappa is the honors society for two-year colleges.

To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, students must have completed at least 12 college credit hours at ACC and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

 

More than 3,500 students have been inducted into the ACC Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

The new members inducted are Medinah Abdulhussein, Chinyere Achife, Heather Aker, Stephen Anderson, Shayan Arshad, Erin Bates, Tamryn Becker-Seals, Andre Bennett, Joshua Boothe, Weston Borger, Lonnie Cannon, Kimberly Cantu, Patricia Champion, Brianna Coates-Strutz, Ngoc-My Dinh, Charlotte Duym, Jamie Escamilla, Amanda Fullingame, Angela Fletcher, Lauren Fontenot, Erin Frelke, Daniele Fuller, Meridith Gage, Dakota Hall, Christina Hensley, Lindsay Holden, Maryssa Johnson, Picaranal Kheang, Paige Lemon, Ashley Kinney, Michael Lingerfelt, Stephanie Hessong, Candace Lovings, Nichole Luera, Brian McCollum, Mubarak Oladejo, Deborah Orrenmaa, Sharon Phillips, John Purkey and Ana Rey.

 

ACC Regents Approve Insurance
Annual premium increases by 11 percent 
Alvin Community College Board of Regents approved a property, liability and casualty insurance policy during their meeting on March 22.

ACC staff recommended the policy with Victory Insurance after a four-month bidding process that included proposals from four insurance firms.

 

Under the approved policy, ACC's annual premium would be $572,489, an 11 percent jump from the previous year.

 

The approved plan provides for $84 million in coverage for ACC.

 

 

Regents also approved fee and tuition adjustments for courses in several programs next fall. There is no increase for student tuition.

 

Regents voted to renew contracts for administrative, professional, and faculty employees for the 2012-13 fiscal year and approved a Programmer position.

ACC Continuing Education Sponsoring Forum
Forum will focus on education and economic success in area

Educational administrators, industry representatives, government officials and economic development leaders will come to the Alvin Community College Nolan Ryan Center on Thursday, May 10 to discuss the future of economic development and education and their impact on workforce development in our community.

The event, Forum for the Future, is part of a campaign for the Center for Houston's Future to determine what local communities can achieve economically by 2040.

Forum for the Future attendees also will talk about what issues local communities face in preparing a well-trained workforce.

Those invited are asked to RSVP by Thursday, May 3. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. For more information call 281-756-3789.

ACC Open House to Showcase College Programs, Organizations on April 12
Event gives students a chance to learn about ACC
ACC students, faculty and staff will give out information, scholarships, food and fun at the annual Open House event on April 12.
Students considering Alvin Community College will learn more about the school and its programs during the annual Open House event on April 12 at the Nolan Ryan Center.

ACC students, faculty and staff will host booths at the event to provide more information about what's available at the college.

Visitors also will be provided with information about financial aid, campus tours, student activities, student clubs, organizations and more.

The event also will have free food, several fun activities and giveaways. Students can enter to win scholarships and door prizes with drawings held at 5:30 and 6:30pm.

ACC Instructors, Students and Community Spin Pots for Charity   

Pottery will be given to the Empty Bowl Houston project 

History instructor Johanna Hume crafted the first pot during the ACC Throw-A-Thon on Friday, March 23.
More than 50 students, instructors, local artists and community members took turns at a spinning wheel on Friday, March 23 to make pottery for a Houston charity.

The Throw-A-Thon participants crafted 111 pots that will go to the Empty Bowl project. The Empty Bowl program sells the pottery and gives proceeds to the Houston Food Bank.

"I think it went fantastic for our first time," ACC visual arts coordinator Cherie Richey said. "People really enjoyed themselves, both potters and non-potters alike."

 

The event lasted throughout the day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Art Department plans to award certificates of achievement to ACC history instructor Johanna Hume, who spun the first bowl made, enrichment workshop student Mike Kirk who finished the last bowl and enrichment workshop student Linda Coney who made the most bowls.

ACC Lab School Students Try Some Green Eggs and Ham  

Meal part of lesson to encourage kids to discover new foods

The Alvin Community College Child Care Center served green oatmeal, green apples, grapes and bell peppers during its 3rd annual Green Food Festival on Friday, March 23.

Students in the 4 and 5-year-old class also cracked eggs and colored them to make green eggs and ham. They cooked the dish after reading the Dr. Seuss book of the same name.

The purpose of the event is to encourage children to eat healthy and to not be afraid of eating something different.

 

"We are trying to get them to eat new foods that they would not ordinarily eat," said Lynn Henderson, nutrition teacher.

ACC Volleyball Team Takes Gulf Coast Sports Day Title
Coed team beat out six teams in spring tournament  
The seven members of the Alvin Community College coed volleyball team won the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate League's Sports Day tournament on March 2.
An Alvin Community College coed volleyball team took home the title for the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Consortium's spring Sports Day on March 1.

The team went undefeated throughout the tournament and finished first ahead of second place Lee College, third place San Jacinto College Central and fourth place College of the Mainland.

Members of the Alvin College GCIC team include, Chelsea Del Bello, of Manvel, Crystal Jackson, of Dickinson, Brittany Decker of Pearland, Brett McCulloch, of Santa Fe, Daryl Morrison, of Santa Fe, Charles Carpenter of Alvin and Josiah Hartley of Alvin. The team was coached by Gary Coffman, ACC sports and human performance instructor.

The Sports Day tournament features events including volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer, billiards and table tennis. Nine colleges and 204 students participated in the event.

ACC Faculty and Community Big Band Host Spring Jazz Concert 

ACC Big Band and Faculty Jazz Combo perform last year's spring jazz concert at the ACC Theatre.
The Alvin Community College Community Big Band and Faculty Jazz Combo will have their spring Jazz Concert on Monday, April 23.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The band will play contemporary and traditional jazz music during the concert.

ACC Employees Learn About Benefits During Fair 

Benefits Fair provided information on health care, retirement and insurance options

Alvin Community College employees had the opportunity to learn more about their benefit options at a Benefits Fair held on March 27

 

"The goal of the event was to educate employees about benefits and services available to them," said Sandra McGary, Administrative Assistant for Human Resources

 

Many employees took advantage of the event organized by HR to rediscover the benefits they currently have and learn how to make the most of those benefits.  Employees were able to review each company's signature services, as well as explore other services and products available to them.

 

For "financial health," representatives from the group of authorized investment providers for Alvin Community College were also on hand to visit with employees.

ACC Honors Students Attend Conference in Kansas
Students get chance to give presentations at the Great Plains Honors Council  
Five Alvin Community College honors students gave presentations on  March 30 to April 1 at the Great Plains Honors Council annual conference in Overland Park, Kansas.

The students honors projects were chosen among two-year and four-year colleges throughout six states including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Missouri. The honors projects covered subjects in Sociology, English, History and Art.

Those presenting at the conference were
Danielle Jones, of Warsaw, VA for a Sociology project; Deanna Gardner, of Liverpool for an Art project; Kassandre Floyd, of Alvin for a History project; Tonya Lloyd, of Alvin for an English project and Sarah Coe of Friendswood, for an English project.

Key note speakers at the conference are Toby Cook, Vice President of Community Affairs for the Kansas City Royals, and Bryan Busby, KMBC News meteorologist and principal timpanist for the Kansas City Symphony.

ACC Art Department to Screen Documentary
First episode of documentary series depicts artists in the 21st Century
Alvin Community College will host a screening of an ongoing PBS documentary on art in the 21st Century on Thursday, April 26.

The ACC Art Department will play one episode of the four-part series called Art21. This is the documentary's six season. The first episode will cover artists who "bear witness" through their work including Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui and Catherine Opie.

ACC is holding the event in conjunction with Alvin ISD and the viewing will be open to the public.

The film will give students and the community a chance to learn about current artists and their works.

"People can actually see what modern artists are doing now," said visual arts coordinator Cherie Richey.

The film will begin at 6 p.m. in the ACC Student Center Texas Room. It is free to the public.

Schedules for Summer Classes Now Available
Registration for summer begins on April 29
Schedules are now available online and throughout the Alvin Community College campus for students looking to register for summer courses.

Registration for the Summer I and 11-week semesters will begin on Tuesday, April 24 through Tuesday, May 29.

Classes begin on Monday, June 4.

Registration for Summer II will begin on Tuesday, June 26 through Tuesday, July 10. Classes will begin on Thursday, July 12.
