ACC Can Feed the Hungry Hosts its Largest Breakfast with Santa Event

Volunteers, clubs and other organizations made Breakfast with Santa a success

Volunteers, clubs and other organizations made Breakfast with Santa a success. The ACC Can Feed the Hungry/Shellie Garza Memorial Food Drive worked with several volunteers and clubs to make this year's Breakfast with Santa one of the biggest ever.

 

More than 100 families received food and toys during the event on December 3.

 

Several ACC organizations and clubs had fundraisers and other events to attract food and toy donations.

 

The ACC Student Veteran Association raised more than $204 during a chili fundraiser for the Toys Thru Us toy drive on Nov. 21.

 

The Lady Dolphin softball team also had an exhibition game against the police cadets to raise toy donations for Breakfast with Santa.

 

In the three days before Breakfast with Santa, several volunteers worked to sort the food for families, sack and wrap the toys for the children in need and helped hand out the food during the December 3 event.

 

ACC Spring Classes Begin on January 17
Late registration begins on January 11

Alvin Community College Students are set to return to class starting January 17.

 

Students have filled the Enrollment Services Center this past week to register for classes. Registration is open and will close on Monday. Late registration will begin on January 11 and will end on January 18.

Dance to the Big Band on February 4
Kurland Street Band has annual performance
The Kurland StreetBand performs during the Big Band Concert in February 2011.
Alvin Community
College will have its annual event, An Evening of Big Band Music by the Kurland Street Band on February 4.
The Kurland Street Band has been donating their time to the event since its inception in 1999. They have been playing professionally throughout southeast Texas for 25 years.

Funds raised at the event will go directly to the Music Department and alumni scholarships.

Tickets are $10 and will include admission to the dance and light refreshments throughout the evening.Tickets are available at the Student Activities Center, Music Department, the Administrative office. They also will be sold at the door.

The dance will be at the Nolan Ryan Center and will run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. For more information about the event, call (281) 756-3686 or (281) 756-3600.

ACC Regents Will Meet January 26

Board members will review abatement policy

 

The Alvin Community College board of regents will have their regular meeting on January 26 at the Nolan Ryan Center.

  

The board last met in November.


The regents are set to discuss a tax abatement project during the meeting.

 

A company is planning an industrial project valued up to $700 million and is seeking a tax abatement for the improvements made at a Chocolate Bayou site, Alvin Economic Development Director Larry Buehler told the board during the November meeting.

ACC Foundation Raises $35,000 for Students and Faculty During Gala

Half of the funds from the Under the Big Top go directly to student scholarships

The Alvin Community College foundation raised more than $35,000 during its 12th Annual Christmas Gala "Under the Big Top" on December 6 at the Nolan Ryan Center.

 

Half of the funds will go directly to student scholarships. The rest of the proceeds also are used to fund for the three Excellence Awards given every year to a professional employee, a faculty member and a technical support, clerical or maintenance employee. The Foundation also uses the funds to support the Summer Children's Theater and the ACC Ambassador program.

 

Funds were raised through live and silent auction events.

 

The Christmas Gala is the ACC Foundation's largest fundraiser of the year.

 

ACC Student Wins iPad in Drawing

Alvin Community College student Jimmy McKinney won the drawing for an Apple iPad on December 6.

His name was chosen among 400 tickets.

Students were eligible for the drawing by wearing their Dolphin Pride T-shirts on Tuesdays during the fall semester. They received a ticket in the drawing for each Tuesday they donned the shirt.

 

Student Activities will have another drawing at the end of the spring semester. Students who want a chance to win can wear their Dolphin Pride shirts on Wednesdays to earn tickets in the drawing.

ACC Development Kids Get Christmas Snow Day

Some snow, donuts and a sit down with Santa

 

Cherish Garrett, 2, of Liverpool digs in the snow at the Child Development Department snow day.

 

The ACC Child Development Department brought in simulated snow on the playground for children to give them a snow day on December 9.

 

The kids sledded down a snowy hill, built snowmen and threw snowballs at each other during the event.

 

Donuts also were served to the kids and parents. Santa also stopped by to talk with the kids.

ACC Baseball Students Sign with NCAA Division I Schools

Four players will continue their baseball career after the Spring 2012 season

Four Alvin Community College baseball players have signed letters of intent to play at Division I teams starting next year.

Wade Konvicka, 19, of Richmond, is set to play at Lamar University; Jacob Lara, 19, of Alvin, signed a letter of intent to Texas State University; Tyler Ford, 20, of Richmond, signed on to play at the University of Houston and Scott Zimmerle, 21, of Danbury will play at the University of Central Arkansas,.


The ACC Dolphin baseball will throw its first pitch on January 27 against Blinn College.

 

The Alvin Community College Lady Dolphin softball team is set to begin its 2012 season on January 27 against Temple College in Temple. For more information about the softball team or baseball teams visit the website.

 

ACC Hosts North American Process Technology Alliance Group will meet at the Nolan Ryan Center on January 27
The North American Process Technology Alliance will have its quarterly meeting on January 27 at the Alvin Community College Nolan Ryan Center.

Representatives from several area community colleges and industrial leaders will be at the meeting to discuss industry needs.

 

The participants also will work on ways to improve process technology education to help workers meet industry needs.

 

NAPTA is an organization that works to build collaboration with industry, schools and communities. They also help determine the standards for Process Technology programs and curriculums.

 

The meeting will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information call the ACC Process Technology Department at 281-756-3785.

 

ACC to Offer Health and Lifestyle Evaluation on January 14
Seminar to help students make positive life choices

Alvin Community College will host another section as part of the Wellness Coach Training that will evaluate students health and lifestyle.

 

This is a gentle approach to finding answers to help participants feel better, be happy and give direction to make positive health and lifestyle changes. The evaluation will help students look at 16 areas of their lives to make personal improvements.

 

The seminar will cost $65 for in-district students and $85 for those who live out of the district.
