Students wanting to further their education at a four-year college or university discovered their options on University Day on November 29.

Representatives from 25 schools set up displays in the Student Center to offer brochures and information about their programs.

Many students from ACC and area high schools came to the event.

High school students can have a difficult time trying to determine where they should go for higher education, said Karen Gapsiewicz, science teacher at Eagle Heights Christian Academy in Pearland.

"Now they're seeing their faces and seeing the information," Gapsiewicz said. "They're seeing their options."

ACC has been hosting University Day for the past 25 years to give ACC students and members of the community a chance to interact with other schools.

Some of the schools that participated include: University of Houston, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State University, University of Houston-Clear Lake and Texas Tech University.

ACC Regents Discuss Abatement Policy

Industrial project seeking incentives to operate plant on Chocolate Bayou

logoAlvin Community College regents discussed whether to implement a tax abatement policy during their meetings in October and November.

A company is planning an industrial project valued up to $700 million and is seeking a tax abatement for the improvements made at a Chocolate Bayou site, Alvin Economic Development Director Larry Buehler told the board on November 17.

ACC President Rodney Allbright said during the meeting that the college could consider a tax abatement project without having to create an abatement policy.

Regents did not take action on an abatement policy but the board is set to review the details of the proposed project at its meeting on January 26.

The board will not meet in December.

Regents also approved hiring several employees both in the October and November meetings. The board approved Process Technology Department Chair Curtis Crabtree, Office Administration Instructor Dianna Smith, Accounting Instructor Thomas Branton, Communications Coordinator John Tompkins, Maintenance and Civil Operator Hollis Clayton Mast, Administrative Assistant for Physical Plant Christen Warfield, Senior Administrative Assistant to the President Linda Smith, Registration Specialist Laura Hoover and College Store Sales Associate Patricia Lingerfelt.
