Regents Approve $1.3 Million TWC Grant
Board Also Approves UHCL Partnership During Meeting
Alvin Community College regents unanimously approved accepting an approximately $1.3 million Texas Workforce Commission Skills Development Fund workforce training grant during a regular meeting on Sept. 23. The 1-year grant will be used in partnership with a petrochemical consortium to provide training on new manufacturing equipment and incorporate advanced topics.

In other matters, board members approved a partnership agreement with University of Houston-Clear Lake. During the next Texas legislative session in 2011, UHCL will be requesting authority from the state to provide freshman and sophomore courses. The partnership agreement with UHCL includes four other community colleges, including College of the Mainland, Galveston College, Lee College and the San Jacinto College District. According to the agreement, UHCL and the five area community colleges desire to establish "a partnership that maximizes educational opportunities for all students and utilizes taxpayer resources in the most efficient and effective manner."

JET Grants Help ACC Acquire New Equipment for Students
ADN, END Programs to Benefit
Funds from the Texas Legislature's Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) program will help Alvin Community College purchase new equipment to assist students in training for the "high demand" technical careers of electroneurodiagnostics (END) and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN). Recently awarded through the Texas Comptroller, the $150,677 grant and $155,000 matching college funds will allow the ACC END program to: acquire three new machines that perform electroencephalograms (EEG), evoked potentials (EP), and nerve conduction studies (NCS); acquire one new machine that performs EEG and polysomnography (PSG) studies; and upgrade four PSG machines to include EEG tests. The new equipment will be shared with students training for careers in polysomnography (sleep study), as well.

Through a partnership with San Jacinto College, ACC's ADN program will also soon receive a new Laerdal SimNewB neonatal simulator with JET program funds. The newborn simulator can be controlled remotely to provide a multitude of body functions and responses that require evaluation by nursing students. Another advantage is that the manikin will allow students to get more training on campus in simulation rooms and not have to rely on limited pediatric and maternity clinical sites. ACC is also working with San Jacinto College in the curriculum development of a hybrid class for maternity and pediatric nursing. The course will utilize a combination of distance learning activities, on-campus experiences in the simulation lab, and traditional-type rotations to various clinical sites.

ACC Partners with UTMB School of Nursing
Agreements Helps with More Seamless RN to BSN Transition
Alvin Community College and the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Nursing in Galveston are partnering to help associate degree nursing (ADN) students transition more seamlessly into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. As part of the agreement, enrolled ACC ADN students will be able to take the junior level course, Legal and Ethical Issues in Healthcare, at UTMB and have those credits apply to both degree requirements. For ACC ADN students, taking the course will also give UTMB another tool to use when selecting students who later apply for the bachelor's degree program.

To enter the bachelor's degree program through the RN to BSN track at UMTB, students must complete all core requirements, pass the Board of Nurse Examiners National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) and be accepted through an application process. Students must earn at least 30 credits from UTMB, including a year-long career pathway research project and clinical site rotations, to be eligible for graduation.
