Incumbents Take Oath for ACC Board 
Barrow, Ercums and Nash to Serve Another 6 Years
oath of officeFollowing the canvass of election, Karlis Ercums, III (left to right), Mac Barrow and L. H. "Pete" Nash were sworn in as regents on the ACC Board during a regular meeting on May 18. Nash and Ercums ran unopposed and Barrow received the majority of the votes (51.6 percent) against Michael "Drab" Green and Jim Sudela during the May 8 election. Nash, Ercums and Barrow just completed their first term on the board in Positions 7, 9 and 8, respectively.
 
During the meeting, board members also elected officers for a two-year term. Nash was unanimously voted into his third consecutive term as chairman and James "Bart" DeWitt will remain as vice chair and Ercums will remain as secretary.

HOSA Students Competing at Nationals 
ACC to be Only Community College in Texas Represented
ACC Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) members Brandy Long, Garrick Alvarez, Azalia Almaguer, Angie Cantu, Rubi Vega and James Endsley recently won regional competitions in Houston and will compete at the national level in Orlando, Fla. at the end of June. They will be the only students representing a community college from Texas at the event. Endorsed by the U. S. Department of Education and Association for Career and Technical Education Health Science Technology Education Division, HOSA is a national student organization dedicated to promoting healthcare industry career opportunities and enhancing quality healthcare for everyone.
Free Veterans' Benefits Seminar Held at ACC 
Representatives from State, Federal Agents to be Present
The Texas Veterans Land Board and ACC will host a free veterans' benefits seminar at the Nolan Ryan Center on June 14. Held from 4 to 7 p.m., the event will feature representatives from the Texas Veterans Land Board, Texas Veterans Commission, U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs and ACC. Guests will be able to learn about various benefits, including: housing loans, land loans, home improvement loans, veterans' homes and state cemeteries, disability and pension claims, employment services, educational benefits, college admission process, financial programs, job training and more. Students Receive Various Honors, Awards
  • ACC Law Enforcement Academy Class No. 80 and 2008 graduate Jared Enochs was honored as the Santa Fe Police Department Officer of the Year by the 50 Club on May 10.
  • ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright honored 17 students as 2010 Presidential Scholars during the President's Tea recently. Some of the requirements to be named a Presidential Scholar are completion of at least 45 credit hours and a minimum 3.90 grade point average. The recipients included: Rose Anderson, Autumn Coe, Shawntay Fernandez, Suzanna Gaeta, Michelle Hulen, Jason Johnson, Elena Kourcheva, Ashlea Massie, Dawn Oleary, Bryden Olson, Kisha Poole, Hollie Sims, Dewey Stevenson, Sara Stover, Timothy Unruh, Ron Vollmering and Heather Walker.
  • The ACC Drama Department and student volunteers were honored with the Grand Prize Best Overall Entry for their float at the Frontier Day Parade on April 24. The event was sponsored by the Alvin Rotary Club.
  • The ACC Athletic Department honored Dolphins baseball player James Wooster, of League City, and Lady Dolphins softball player Vianca Pesina, of Robstown, as the most valuable players of the 2009-2010 season during the annual Sports Banquet on April 30. Head Coaches Dr. Jennifer Hightower and Bryan Alexander also honored the student athletes for their academic and overall athletic performances. Both teams made it to the playoffs this year. The ACC Dolphins baseball team finished their season at the NJCAA Region XIV tournament on May 17 with a loss to Blinn in the 13th inning, only two games from the final championship match.
  • Manvel High School and ACC dual credit student Arianna Ramirez-Sparrow was honored at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with a $15,000 scholarship for her artwork. She is in the top 10 percent of her graduating class and will be attending University of Houston in the fall.
Baseball Team Dedicates New Locker Room 
Building Named for Father-in-Law of Nolan Ryan
locker roomThe ACC Dolphins Baseball Team dedicated their new locker room to C. B. "Larry" Holdorff, father-in-law of MLB pitcher and Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, during the last home game of their regular season on April 28. The Ryans donated the locker room for the benefit of the student athletes.
 
Holdorff supported athletics for children throughout his life. He also believed in the importance of good sportsmanship. He served as a trustee for the Alvin Independent School District and Alvin Community College.
ACC Employees Graduate 
cassieACC employees Kim Covington, Vic Kalsey, Steve Cabrera, Sheila Jones and Cassie Johnson (right) graduated from ACC during the commencement ceremony on May 11. Kim teaches EMT courses, Vic is an instructor for the Process Technology Department, Steve is an IT network administrator, Sheila is an administrative assistant with Child Development and Cassie works for CE and the marketing department. Cassie, who was chosen as a class speaker at commencement, is also a student ambassador and received this year's President's Award.
 
Upward Bound Students Honored at AHS Awards Night 
Many Receive Scholarships During Event
upward boundACC Upward Bound Director Regan Motoyer and Advisor Sharmeal Archie honored Upward Bound students who are graduating from Alvin High School during the AHS 2010 Senior Awards Night on May 10. Upward Bound, created and endorsed by the Department of Education, seeks to motivate low-income, potential first-generation college students and help them develop the skills they need to complete secondary education and succeed at the post-secondary educational institution of their choice. The purpose of the program is to build confidence and self-esteem, while providing the necessary tools and guidance to foster academic success. The program at ACC was made possible by an initial five-year federal grant that has been renewed until 2012. Many of the Upward Bound students also received various scholarships during the event.
 
'Super Saturday' Makes First-time Registration at ACC Easy 
Test, Register and More at Event
To make registering at ACC easy for first-time students, Advising Services will host its fifth annual "Super Saturday" event on June 26. New students will be able to complete steps for starting fall classes in one day, including: placement testing, meeting with an academic advisor and registering for Fall 2010 classes. Payment deadline for Fall 2010 classes is Aug. 23 and payment plans are available. Super Saturday begins promptly at 8 a.m. in the Enrollment Services Center (ESC) in Building A. Transfer students are also encouraged to attend.  Transfer students are required to also submit an application, make a reservation, and bring a sealed official transcript from all colleges attended. Children's Theatre Gives Kids a Chance to Grow, Shine 
Plays to be Performed in June, July
children's theaterIt takes a lot of people with a wide variety of talents and abilities to put on a live stage production. That's why the Summer Children's Theatre Festival at ACC has been a great environment for kids to learn valuable life skills for over 25 years. In addition to acting roles, the ACC Summer Children's Theatre Festival gives many participants a chance to construct and paint sets, build and paint properties, operate a light board and even manage shows. Since the ACC Summer Children's Theatre Festival began in 1985, hundreds of young people have produced 50 plays. The first summer show, "King Midas and the Touch of Gold," will be performed June 21-24 and the second show, "The Brave Little Tailor," will be July 26-29. Student Activities Hosts Blood Drive on June 15-16 
Consider Enrolling in 'Commit for Life'
ACC Student Activities will host a blood drive at the main campus on June 15-16 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. ACC blood drive donors will receive a free T-shirt and have the opportunity to enroll in the Blood Center's Commit for Life program.  Commit for Life encourages people to donate regularly to save lives and earn different levels of service. ACC and Summer Make Great Combo for Kids 
Activities in Art, Sports, Computers and More Offered
kids collegeACC and summer make a perfect combination for kids. ACC will be hosting its annual Busy Bodies Kids' College in June and July at the ACC main campus and Pearland Center and at Mary Marek Elementary in Pearland in August.
 
Students entering kindergarten through sixth grade for the 2010-2011 school year are eligible to participate in numerous classes. Kids will have the opportunity to learn skills in pottery, sports, art, computers, and much more. For more information, call (281) 756-3729.

Softball Skills Camp Held for Girls Ages 7-14 
Participants Can Learn Skills in Hitting, Throwing, Base Running and More
The ACC Athletic Department will host its 11th Annual All-Skills Softball Camp June 28 to July 1 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Basic softball skills, including catching, hitting, throwing, base running, stealing and sliding, will be covered. The camp, which will be held at the ACC Ruth Ryan Softball Field, is designed for girls ages 7 to 14 of all skill levels. The cost is $65 and a T-shirt will be provided. Alvin Parks Department Hosts Annual Fourth of July Fireworks 
Alvin Community Band to Start Evening with Great Music
fireworksThe Alvin Parks and Recreation Department will hosts its annual Fourth of July fireworks display adjacent to Alvin Community College on Sunday, July 4.  The Alvin Community Band will perform classic favorites from 7:30 p.m. until dusk (approximately 9 p.m.) in front of the flag poles of the ACC main campus. Fireworks will immediately follow.

Foundation Presents Excellence Awards 
Lewis, Durand and Castillo Honored
excellence awardsACC Foundation President Cheryl Knape (right photo, right to left) announced this year's Excellence Award recipients, Paula Castillo, Sally Durand and Bill Lewis, at the annual President's Tea recently. Each year, the ACC Foundation presents the Excellence Awards to an ACC TSCM (Technical, Clerical, Support, Maintenance) employee, administrative staff employee, and faculty member. The three recipients were nominated by college faculty and staff and selected by a committee. Each recipient receives a plaque and $1,000. The goal of these awards is to recognize individual staff members who have not only achieved excellence in performance of their job over a sustained period of time, but have also provided exemplary service to the college and community. The ACC Foundation hosts events each year to raise money for student scholarships and these awards. Paula, an Alvin resident who is the housekeeping supervisor, received the Ida Blanchette Excellence Award for TSCM staff. She has been at ACC since 1989. Sally, a Friendswood resident who is the college's Associate Degree Nursing director, received the Jo Bennett Excellence Award for administrative staff. She has been at ACC since 1980. Bill, an Alvin resident and the college's Broadcast Communications Department chair, received the Joe Phillips Excellence Award for faculty. He has been at ACC since 1995.
 
ACC Offers Summer Art Enrichment Workshops 
Classes in Jewelry Making, Pottery, Sculpture, Photography and More Available
Experienced or new artists who don't have the resources to create their own professional art studio in their home can utilize ACC's studios for a reasonable fee during the summer. In addition to being able to work with professional equipment, artists will also have the opportunity to gain valuable insight from instructors when available through the ACC Art Department enrichment workshops, which include pottery, sculpture, jewelry making, photography, painting and drawing. For details, call ACC Art Department Chair Dennis LaValley at (281) 756-3752.
