Regents Approve Reconstruction for Jogging Track 
SACS Process Discussed, Fees Adjusted
ACC regents approved funds for the reconstruction of the two-mile walking/jogging track at the main campus during a regular meeting on Feb. 25. Construction is scheduled to begin in April and will take approximately a month to complete. Construction will also occur in sections so portions of the track can be utilized throughout the process. ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright, ACC Provost and Dean of Instruction Dr. John Bethscheider and ACC Dean of Academic Programs Dr. Drew Nelson presented information regarding the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) reaffirmation of accreditation process. In other matters, board members approved some fee changes for the next academic year. Each year, a standing committee at ACC reviews tuition and fees for credit and continuing education/workforce development courses as required by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Coordinators Meet with TWC Commissioner 
Wiener, Hayes Discuss New Grant with Congleton
commissioner congletonACC Continuing Education Workforce Development Grant Coordinators Joy Wiener and Bob Hayes met with Texas Workforce Commission Commissioner Ronald Congleton in Austin on Feb. 25. Wiener and Hayes discussed a current grant that is helping selected individuals receive tuition-free technical training through a partnership with Texas State Technical College and San Jacinto College. The grant is providing training for up to 80 individuals to become industrial electrical technicians at the ACC Pearland Center and up to 68 individuals to become licensed vocational nurses at two San Jacinto campuses. Wiener and Hayes were participating in the annual Pearland Day in Austin event coordinated by the Pearland Chamber of Commerce. ACC Hosts GCIC Jazz Festival 
Event to Bring Full Day of Great Music to Alvin
andre haywardCommunity college jazz bands from throughout southeast Texas will participate in the all-day annual Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Conference (GCIC) Jazz Festival at ACC on March 27. Each year, GCIC community college students gather at a different host college to make music, share ideas, attend profesisonal workshops and receive critiques from judges in order to improve their skills. The guest clinician and performer at the event this  year will be Andre Hayward, a professional jazz trombonist and world-renowned educator. The day-long event concludes with Hayward performing as the featured artist with the GCIC Directors' Band at 7:30 p.m. The GCIC Jazz Festival is free to the public and all performances will be held in the newly renovated ACC Theatre. Filing to Run in Board Election Open through March 8 
Three ACC Regent Positions Open
The filing period to run in the ACC Board Election on May 8 is open through March 8. To run for a board member position, individuals must meet certain requirements and file an "Application for Place on the Ballot." The application and a candidate package can be obtained in room B202, on the main campus, during regular business hours. ACC Foundation will Highlight Randy Lemmon's Books at Event
randy lemmonNewsRadio 740 KTRH GardenLine host and author Randy Lemmon will be the guest speaker at the annual ACC Foundation Author's Luncheon on April 6, at 11:30 a.m., at the Nolan Ryan Center. In addition to providing tips to listeners on his radio program, Lemmon is the author of Gulf Coast Gardening and Golfer's Guide to Gardening.
 
The Author's Luncheon is held each year to raise funds for ACC student scholarships, staff development and community enrichment programs. Tickets are $40 each and a reserved table for eight is $400. For more information, call (281) 756-3600.
ACC Students Gain Valuable Experience at Houston Rodeo 
Internship Provides Valuable Training, Insight into Television Production

This is what ACC Broadcast Communications students involved in an exclusive internship opportunity for video production services with the Houston Livestock Show an Rodeo (HLSR) get to experience in March. In addition to learning the technical aspects of the job, they will get to feel the pressure and excitement of performing their duties for the "world's largest livestock exhibition and world's richest regular-season rodeo."
 
As part of their responsibilities, the 22 interns are required to: shoot video footage throughout the Reliant complex, excluding the evening performances in the stadium; produce a video series aimed at young people called Stampede TV; implement computer graphics for the televised rodeo performances; and monitor news feeds for the duration of the rodeo.
 
Spring Musical 'Into the Woods' Opens March 6

Athletic Department Hosts Annual Golf Tournament 
Event to Raise Funds for Women's Softball Program
golf tournamentThe ACC Athletic Department will host its 7th annual golf tournament on Monday, March 29, at Southwyck Golf Club in Pearland. Funds raised from the event will be used toward scholarships and other needs for the ACC women's softball team.

Former Military Personnel Finding Niche in Nursing 
Faculty Finds Military Helps Prepare Veterans for Nursing Careers
veteran nursesIt's common to find former and current military personnel pursuing various degrees at ACC, but a group of seven has found a niche in nursing this academic year. Regardless of their reasons for choosing nursing and ACC, the military-trained students are an excellent fit and addition according to ADN Department Chair Sally Durand. "The faculty finds that students with military backgrounds are focused, responsible and exhibit a maturity beyond their years," she said. "They approach their nursing education as a mission to accomplish."
 
ACC SGA Announces New Officers 
Organization Designed to be the Voice of Students
sga officersThe ACC Student Government Association recently named its new officers for 2010. They are: Tim Gusey, of Alvin, president; Maritza Lopez, of Pearland, vice president; Amanda Gardner, of Alvin, treasurer; and Michael Christian, of Friendswood, secretary. The purpose of the SGA is to be the voice of all students by connecting students to other students, faculty, staff, and administrators in order to improve the quality of ACC. The ACC SGA is under the direction of ACC Student Activities Coordinator Brooke Dedmon.
 
AISD, ACC Announce Science Fair Winners 
Over 150 Junior High and High School Students Participate in Annual Event
science fairApproximately 150 Alvin Independent School District high school and junior high students participated in the 15th Annual AISD and Alvin Community College Science Fair at the college's main campus on Feb. 4. In addition to students receiving awards for first through third place and honorable mentions in numerous categories, six overall winners were announced and each awarded a $200 scholarship to ACC.
 
Mr. C's Deli & Bistro Opens at ACC 
New Restaurant Offers Wide Selection, Reasonable Prices
new deliAfter over a year of being without food service at the college, Mr. C's Deli & Bistro opened at ACC on Feb. 15. For years, the college operated its own food service, but when Hurricane Ike hit in September 2008, it gave the college an opportunity to remodel the facilities and search for better options.
 
Under the direction of Wanda Fife, Mr. C's Deli & Bistro is aiming to offer an excellent variety of quality food at a reasonable price. Fife served as the executive assistant to the general manager at Moody Gardens Hotel & Convention Center and is still decorating for special occasions.
 
Free AutoCAD Workshops Offered at ACC 
Learn 2D and 3D Modeling
To give people interested in computer-aided design an opportunity to learn about basic AutoCAD techniques and the various industries they are used, the Industrial Design Technology Department at ACC will offer a free workshop on March 6, April 17 and May 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hosted by the department's instructors, the workshop will cover an introduction into two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) design using AutoCAD, one of the world's most popular drafting and design software applications. Participants will also learn about the development and applications of a 3D model and observe how a 3D printer works. Each workshop is limited to only 20 participants, so reservations should be made as soon as possible. The workshop will be held in Building N, Room N108.
