Regents Approve New Degree Program
Certificate, Degree in END to be Offered Fall 2010 |
ACC regents authorized administrators to plan for a new certificate and associate degree in electroneurodiagnostic (END) technology during a regular meeting on Nov. 19. According to ACC Respiratory Care Department Chair Diane Flatland, who will oversee the program, only one other community college in Texas (McLennan Community College in Waco) offers the training and a survey of area hospitals demonstrates demand.

 ACC Process Technology Department Chair Mark Demark (right photo, left) was presented with a plaque from Gov. Rick Perry recognizing the program's recent certification through the Texas Skill Standards Board by ACC Dean of Instruction and Provost Dr. John Bethscheider at the last board meeting on Nov. 19. The program is recognized by TSSB for being integrated with statewide, industry-defined standards. |
Help Feed the Hungry for the Holidays
Annual Food Drive Needs Your Support |
 The Church of Christ Student Fellowship organization at ACC is hosting its annual ACC Can Feed the Hungry food drive at the main campus through Dec. 11. ACC Student Activities and the Veterans Club will also be holding a toy drive so local children will be able to receive a gift along with food for the holiday season. Non-perishable food items and toys can be dropped off throughout the ACC campus until Dec. 11. Items will be sacked on Dec. 11 and distributed on Dec. 12. Forsythe Inducted into Texas Radio Hall of Fame
Former Broadcast Communications Department Chair Honored |
 Cathy Forsythe, who served as a professional radio broadcaster, voice talent and chair of the Broadcast Communications Department at Alvin Community College for nearly 30 years, was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame posthumously during a ceremony on Nov. 8. Her children, Chris and Cara, accepted the honor on her behalf. As a radio broadcaster for numerous stations, such as KTRH 740 AM, KILT 100 FM, KRBE 104 FM and several others, and voice talent for video, commercial and other productions, Cathy used her experience to help ACC students reach their broadcast communication goals. The ACC Broadcast Communications Department operates KACC 89.7 FM and KACC TV Comcast Channel 16 as laboratories for students to gain actual experience. |
Baylor Physicians Receive Training at ACC
Doctors Learn Polysomnography Skills |
 Physicians from the Baylor College of Medicine received training on how to hook up leads for polysomnography (sleep study) testing at ACC on Nov. 24. ACC developed the first advanced technical certificate for polysomnography training in Texas in 2005 and introduced an Associate of Applied Science degree in polysomnography in 2006. As a result, ACC became the first community college in the Houston area, and the second in the state, to offer an associate degree in this field. The doctors who participated included: Lubna Javed, M.D., Anandhi Murugan, M.D., Supriya Singh, M.D., Hashir Majid, M.D., and Bindu Akkanti, M.D. |
VFW Honors Shafer at ACC Veterans' Day Ceremony
15-Year-Old Raises Funds for DeGeorge Homeless Shelter |
 On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, VFW Alvin Post 5237 member John Theodore presented Jake Shafer, 15, a citation in recognition of his service to veterans and the community at the annual ACC Veterans' Day Ceremony on Nov. 11. For the past 4 years, Jake has been collecting donations of goods and money for the DeGeorge Homeless Veterans Shelter in Houston. Since he began, he has collected over 500 boxes of clothing and non-perishable food items and $6,000. |
Alumni Involved in China Police Student Exchange

 Sam Houston State University Criminal Justice Professors Dr. Phillip Lyons, an Alvin Community College alumnus, and Dr. Jurg Gerber brought Zhejiang Police College Associate Professor Ding (Jane) Jingyan to Alvin to tour the Alvin Police Department as an example of positive community policing philosophies and practices on Nov. 24. APD Chief Mike Merkel, who is also an ACC graduate, and Crime Prevention Officer Ruben Solano guided the tour.
Currently, 16 students from China's Zhejiang Police College are participating in an exchange program with SHSU for an academic year. The Zhejiang province is located on the eastern coastline of China. SHSU is working to bring some of those students to Alvin to work with officers for a week.

Students Host Annual Free Baseball Camp
Event Open to Kids Ages 5-16 |
ACC students will host the 8th Annual Free Baseball Camp on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Phillips Field on the main campus. This free camp, offered by the ACC Coaching Baseball class students, is open to youth ages 5 to 16. Participants will learn hitting, fielding, base running and pitching skills. Baseball Program Fundraising Dinner, Auction Set for Dec. 4
Proceeds Help Team with Needs |
The ACC Baseball Team will host its annual fundraising dinner and auction at Living Faith Outreach, in Dickinson, on Friday, Dec. 4. Guests and sports enthusiasts will have an excellent opportunity to acquire a variety of professional sports memorabilia and game packages during silent and live auctions held in conjunction with a catered dinner during the event.
Tickets for the dinner are $15 each. Funds from the auctions and dinner will be used for the needs of the ACC Baseball program. Choir Presents Annual Christmas Concert

The ACC Music Department will host its annual Christmas Choir Concert at First United Methodist Church in Alvin on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The program will include Benjamin Britten's "A Ceremony of Carols" accompanied by harp and other holiday favorites. Alvin Announces Plans for New Hospital
Facility Expects to Have Huge Impact on ACC Graduates |
On Nov. 11, the City of Alvin announced that "an over $100 million full service hospital and medical office complex" will be built in the city. It will be located north of the city on Highway 35 across from the community of Kendall Lakes. The developers will be Rowland Companies Central and RC Healthcare Properties. The facility will be managed and operated by Christus Health. Representatives from the project have toured ACC at least twice. The project is expected to have a huge impact on the college and provide great opportunities for ACC graduates. |
YMCA Honors Del Bello as 'Volunteer of the Year'
15-year ACC Employee Helps Y Get Started in Alvin |
 The YMCA honored ACC Assistant to the President Wendy Del Bello as a "Volunteer of the Year" during its annual celebration in Houston on Nov. 12. Wendy was one of 37 volunteers from throughout Texas to receive the honor. She has been a board member of the Alvin YMCA since 2003 and served as chairman last year. Wendy was also recognized in 2006 for her involvement in chairing the YMCA's Partners Campaign. In addition to the YMCA, she volunteers on the Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and for Soroptimist International of Alvin.

 Audiences will get to enjoy the classic tale of Ralphie's quest for a Red Ryder BB gun, new soft seats and a remodeled venue when ACC presents "A Christmas Story" in the main campus theatre Dec. 5-6 and 10-12.
