Fall Fitness Fair Set for Nov. 4
Many Screenings Offered for Free |
 The ACC health and medical programs will sponsor their annual Fall Health and Fitness Fair on Nov. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the new Science/Health Science Building on the main campus. The event will focus on health awareness, prevention and treatment awareness and the importance of positive lifestyle habits. Numerous health screenings, informational booths and healthcare professionals will be available. There is no charge to attend the event and many of the screenings will be free. Students Get Live Country Music History Lesson

 It's one thing to learn about history by reading a textbook; it's another to learn it by participating in a live concert. For ACC students enrolled in a country music history course designed to fulfill music appreciation credits toward a degree, that is exactly what they experience. Each semester, ACC instructor and professional musician James Harvey gathers friends from the music industry to bring the country music to life.

ACC Hosts 34th Annual Poetry Workshop
Event Held to Help Improve Writing |
ACC will host its annual Fall Poetry Workshop on Nov. 21 in the new Science/Health Science Building, Room S102, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A guest critic will be available to offer positive criticism and suggestions on poetry submitted prior to the event. The deadline to submit poetry is Nov. 13. The event is free for ACC students and writers over 60, $5 for high school students with valid ID and $10 for all others. Lansford Nominated for Piper Professor Award

 ACC math instructor Tammi Lansford was recently nominated by her peers to represent the college and compete with educators throughout Texas for the prestigious Piper Professor Award. The Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation, a non-profit oganization orchestrated through the Texas Comptroller's office, annually awards $5,000 to 15 professors throughout the state for their superior teaching at the college level. Participation in the Piper Professor Program is by invitation only. |

The artworks of ACC students will be on exhibit in the ACC Gallery Nov. 9 through Dec. 4. The student exhibit will consist of a variety of art produced during the fall semester, including: sculptures, paintings, ceramics, photography, digital arts, and jewelry. Carrier Hosts Various Speakers in Social Work Class

Throughout October, ACC Mental Health Department Chair Dr. Jerry Carrier brought in guest speakers to his Social Work class. Some of the speakers included ACC alumna Kim Dudley, who assists with gang renunciation in the state prisons, Communities in Schools (CIS Director of Program Development Roberta Leal and CIS Campus Coordinator Robin Ciresi, and Dr. Debra Meehl, founder of The Meehl Foundation which is dedicated to helping families and individuals live successfully with bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, depression and other serious mental illnesses. Student Invited to Washington, D. C. Conference

ACC student Rubi Vega was one of two Texans recently invited to attend the 2009 Conference on Higher Education and International Volunteer Service as a U. S. student scholar in Washington, D. C. Nov. 12-14. The conference is hosted by Partners of the Americas, an organization designed to bring together volunteers from the United States, Latin American and the Caribbean "to improve the lives of people across the hemisphere."

Texas District 11 Senator Mike Jackson and District 29 Representative Randy Weber addressed ACC student ambassadors during their monthly meeting at the main campus on Oct. 5. In addition to answering questions, Sen. Jackson and Rep. Weber discussed their experiences serving as legislators, issues involving their districts and the state, and support of community colleges. Weber is an ACC alumnus. |

 After over 30 years of wear and tear and damage from Hurricane Ike, the old theatre seats have been replaced with new, high back comfortable chairs. In all, the theatre received new walls, a new stage and renovated associated areas. Recently, it also upgraded lighting equipment. ACC Instructor Hosts Mock Grand Jury
Students Benefit from Participation Each Semester |
 For the past two years, attorney and ACC instructor Joseph Gutheinz, Jr. has been coordinating a mock grand jury each semester to give students an opportunity to gain valuable experience in an actual courtroom. This year, the mock grand jury involved students from the criminal justice, paralegal and court reporting programs at ACC. Students focus on one case that is unfolding in the media so they can go through the "various stages necessary to bring about a final resolution of the case, beginning with the grand jury itself, where the decision to indict or not to indict is made."

The ACC Foundation will host its annual Christmas Gala on Dec. 1, at 6 p.m., at the Nolan Ryan Center. Celebrating the Christmas traditions around the world, the ACC Foundation has chosen Texas as this year's theme. There will be a wine reception, dinner, silent and live auctions and live country music entertainment. Soroptimist Offers Women's Opportunity Award
Single Moms in College Can Apply for $500 Award |
Women who provide the primary financial support for their families and are enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a vocational/technical skills training program or an undergraduate degree program are eligible for the Soroptimist International of Alvin Women's Opportunity Award of $500. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and cannot have already earned an undergraduate degree. Application packets are availabe in the Human Resources Department at ACC, Room C100, and at the Alvin Independent School District administration offices, 301 E. House Street.
Applications must be turned into either of those locations by Dec. 1.
