Latinos for a Secure Retirement, a new coalition of prominent Latino advocates, was formed as a voice for the Latino community to fight to defend Social Security.
The coalition emerged in response to recent attacks on Social Security. Opponents to Social Security falsely claimed that the program was contributing the nation's deficit problems. The Latino community is affected by Social Security specifically as the program accounts for nearly all the income for almost half of Latino seniors. Social Security continues to keep millions of Latinos out of poverty each year.
Latinos for a Secure Retirement unveiled their plan and policy recommendations in a report, "Protecting Social Security: A Blueprint for Strengthening Social Security for All Americans." The plan makes recommendations that would ensure the sustainability and durability of Social Security without any cuts to benefits or increase in the retirement age.
