Crimes against Persons with Disabilities

The Bureau of Justice Statistics in the Department of Justice released data from 2008-2010 about crimes against individuals with disabilities over the age of 12. In 2010, the rate of crimes against people with disabilities was almost twice the rate for people without disabilities (28 victimizations per 1,000 individuals with disabilities compared to 15 per 1,000 individuals without disabilities).

The FBI has released 2010 Hate Crime Statistics.

As part of our work with our local Collaborative to Address Crime Victimization of People with Developmental Disabilities, The Arc of Aurora developed a Communication Quick Tips tool that is targeted to first responders, other law enforcement personnel, victim advocates, and prosecutors who may encounter victims of crime who have an intellectual or developmental disability.  You are welcome to use the tool as it is developed; for any other use, please contact Jean at The Arc of Aurora.
