Happy New Year!

...  a new year to grow the work we do on behalf of crime victims with developmental disabilities.  Let us know what those activities are and we will pass word of them along.

Our local Collaborative to Address Crime Victimization of People with Developmental Disabilities is planning its National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) activities: participation in our local Ceremony of Remembrance, recognition of prosecutor(s), education opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities.  I am happy to chat about any of our Collaborative's work, group constitution, logistics, etc. -- buzz or email me.

We hope 2011 is a year of good health and much progress in your work with and on behalf of crime victims with developmental disabilities.  Let us know how we may be a resource to you.

Department of Justice 2009 Hate Crimes Statistics

There were 6,604 hate crimes reported in 2009, a decrease from 7,783 in 2008. However, the number of reported hate crimes against a person with a disability increased from 0.9% (85) in 2008 to 1.5% (97) in 2009.

NOEWAIT State Waitlist Campaign Directory

Waiting for services and supports often means that a person has fewer contacts and is out and about in the community less often, thereby possibly increasing the person's vulnerability.  Thus the urgency to fund services and supports for people with developmental disabilities so they may live complete, rewarding lives.  Many states have end-the-waiting-list campaigns, and NOEWAIT has compiled a State Waitlist Campaign Directory.  If there is no entry for a state, it means NOEWAIT has no information.

The waitlist is a national problem, with more than 370,000 individuals needing services.  NOEWAIT is working to have all state's efforts included in its directory.  Generally, waitlist campaigns are run by The Arc, the Developmental Disability Council, Protection and Advocacy organizations, or a coalition of groups.  Forward any contact information, including addresses, email, web pages, phone, names, etc., about waiting lists for services and supports for people with developmental disabilities to noewait@aol.com.

Partnerships Researcher-Practitioner Justice Criminal Enhancing and Building

NIJ is seeking applications for funding multiple projects in support of criminal justice researcher-practitioner partnerships, as well as capturing, in detail, relevant accounts of these collaborations. This solicitation specifically aims to support activities that capture and build on these efforts and that provide opportunities for creating, enhancing, and sustaining criminal justice researcher-practitioner partnerships that will lead to better criminal justice policy, practice, and research. Projects that address issues and agencies in the juvenile justice system are also eligible.

Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program Grant

Nationwide Program for National and State Background Checks for Direct Patient Access Employees of Long Term Care Facilities and Providers Grant

These facilities and providers include skilled nursing facilities, nursing facilities, home health agencies, hospice care providers, long-term care hospitals, personal care service providers, adult day care providers, residential care providers, assisted living facilities, intermediate facilities for the mentally retarded (ICFs/MR) and other entities that provide long-term care services, as specified by each participating State.

National Resource Sharing Project
The National Resource Sharing Project (RSP) and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) have developed two assessment tools to assist those working with victims of sexual violence in identifying strengths and strategies to improve their practice. The Personal Assessment tool will help individual advocates to reflect on their own services, knowledge and relationships with community partners.  The Organizational Assessment will help organizations' leadership staff to better understand the state of their service provision overall, their entire staff's knowledge and their organization's relationships with community partners.
