QUICK LINKS

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:BenCaronBen Caron, CSULA Student of Music and Theatre Arts & Dance
Ben Caron

Theatre Arts and Dance and Music major, and President of the Student Alumni Association, and student theatre director, actor, theatre intern, and activist, Ben Caron stopped in to tell Arts & Letters about all of his current projects.

It took 2 days.

Ben is fresh off the stage of the wildly successful run of Urinetown: The Musical, produced by the CSULA Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, where he appeared as Bobby Strong, the show's ill-equipped almost-hero -- an archetypal musical theatre hero gone awry.  The character of Bobby Strong goes awry in the most thorough sense:  he is killed before he can resolve his heroic trajectory.

Ben Caron is in the midst of his own trajectory as an actor and performer.  From his experience playing Bobby Strong, Ben says he learned to have greater trust in himself as an actor, to allow himself to act in character without instantly criticizing each moment. There is a fine balance, he says, between being unduly proud of yourself, and ruining the moment by over-criticizing it.

It is a balance he works to keep in his off-stage life as well.

As President of the Student Alumni Association at CSULA, Ben sits on the Board of the Alumni Association.  Once per quarter, the Association does volunteer work at the Midnight Mission -- a homeless shelter and addiction recovery center downtown.

Ben's most recent project is his role as Playwright for the one-act play Fairytale Wedding, produced by Three of a Kind Theatre Company at the Secret Rose Theatre in Hollywood.  Fairytale Wedding is a social action piece, exploring contemporary ideas about marriage.  The play was motivated by Ben's conviction that contemporary American society, he says, "has reached a point where there is an obvious need to reexamine what it means to be married, and why we have marriage at all."  Ben has done a lot of activism work related to Prop 8, and Fairytale Wedding came out of his very strong feelings about the results of the vote in November 08. (You can catch Fairytale Wedding as part of the short play festival "State of the Union," with one more showing, June 14 at 3pm, at the Secret Rose Theatre.)

Ben became a theatre major after taking a Theatre 101 class at Cal State LA.  Through his experiences in that class, he says he "discovered a wealth of faculty who really care about their students, and work really hard to prepare their students for the professional world and even get them work outside of school.  At other schools, I would probably be an anonymous face, but here, all the teachers know me, and I know they are working hard to help me succeed."

Currently, Ben is interning as an Assistant Director for the Elephant Theatre Company's production of Block Nine by Tom Stanczyk.  For the future, Ben plans to study abroad in London, and then allow himself four solid years of auditioning and working in theatre.  After that, he says, "I'm going to re-evaluate my goals."
