Pressing Issues - The Graphic Works of Henri Matisse at Gallery C
It's hard to keep things simple in a world filled with gold-embossed calligraphy. See how one famous artist cut the frills by drawing with scissors cutting shapes out of sheets of heavy paper pre-painted in gouache with intense and pure colors, and then arranged and rearranged the shapes on plain paper until satisfied with the composition.
Gallery C is pleased to present an intimate exhibition of 13 graphic works by the master Henri Matisse. While most famous for his brilliantly colored paintings, Matisse was also a dedicated print maker. This rare presentation of original stone lithographs, stencils, and lino-cuts spans the period between1937-1958. Several of these artworks utilize the cut-out, the most recognizable signature of Matisse's later period.
"I don't think I have ever achieved such perfect equalibrium as I have now with these cut-outs." -Henri Matisse
Matisse joyously felt that with his cutouts he was truly free to work with color itself. "Instead of drawing and then applying color, I draw direct with color," he said. He believed in his final years that this technique became his primary artistic medium and legend, even surpassing his paintings. He felt that his cutout creations met his duty as an artist: "I believe my role is to provide calm. Because, I myself have need of peace."
This Gallery C exhibition has two works where Henri Matisse himself drew the image on the surface from which the print was impressed. One is a linoleum cut from 1940; the other a stone lithograph from 1938. The other works on display are examples from his cutouts, including numerous of the famous covers for Teriade's VERVE plus several produced by the noted Paris lithography firm of Mourlot.
Movie Night: The fascinating documentary film about Matisse and Sister Jacques-Marie's personal relationship from the time she answered his advertisement for a studio assistant to their collaboration on his masterwork, The Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, France. (67 minutes, subtitled, 2003)
RSVP Required, Space is limited to 20 Guests, Tuesday Night July 31st, 7:00 - 7:30 pm Social Time, 7:30-8:45 Screening.

The Beltline Buzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on The Beltline Buzz.. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of The Beltline Buzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.
That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "The Beltline Buzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money. We hope that you continue to enjoy your Beltline Buzz. We look forward to delivering it.
