The Accidental Tourist - Road Trip to Hillsborough, NC
The weather's sweltering and you're itching for days off you don't have. Why let city limits limit your fun? Hit the road while you can and spend a few hours in Hillsborough, NC. This quaint, historic town is only 30 minutes from Raleigh and offers enough food and fun for a weekend. Not convinced? We'll badger you 'til you are.
If you live in the Triangle, you should definitely make a point to take a trip to downtown Hillsborough. Churton Street runs through the center of downtown and is home to many restaurants and shops. The restaurants are all local and great. Even better, you can support the local economy by eating chocolate! Matthew's Chocolates: located in Historic Downtown Hillsborough since 2007. The store is owned by Matthew Shepherd who uses his training as a chef and perfumer (he used to own an incense manufacturing company) to create fresh, handmade chocolates. Matt uses only the finest Swiss & Belgium chocolates and completely natural essential oils to make his gourmet confections. Everything is made at the shop; from Creme Brulee truffles, mint cremes, to his best selling sweet, salty, decadent Spicy Thai Peanut Bark. They will box an assortment per your specifications or sell individual pieces to enjoy on the spot.
Matthews Chocolates doesn't have a website, so you'll just have to head to the historic section of Hillsborough and find them at 107 N. Churton St, Hillsborough, 27278, 919-732-0900.
Panciuto : A Locally sourced, sustainably raised, Southern influenced Italian dining experience.
Aaron Vandemark, chef and owner of Panciuto, grew up in the Triangle. In 2006, Aaron opened Panciuto in historic downtown Hillsborough. With numerous awards and nominations already in his honor, Aaron has quite a reputation among being the best of the best of restaurant chefs.
Panciuto provides its customers with simple, creative and memorable meals in a comfortable dining room with attentive and friendly service. Always committed using the best local meats and produce available, their menu changes weekly depending on what happens to be growing in our area. Panciuto is recognizably Italian with a measure of Southern inflection. Panciuto located at 110 South Churton St. Hillsborough, 27278. 919.732.6261. Open Wed-Sat, 5:30-8:30. Walk-ins welcome but reservations preferred. Website.
Saratoga Grill owned and operated by Kevin and Colleen St. John. This downtown Hillsborough restaurant opened in 1995. The St. John's came to NC from upstate, New York, where Kevin had worked in the restaurant business for 18 years before opening this one. The first restaurant he waited tables in as a teenager was in Saratoga, N.Y., and with both he and Colleen being horse racing fans, the cafs name and logo seemed inevitable.
Featuring fresh mesquite and charcoal grilled seafood, and several beef, and steak dishes, the St. John's insist on the highest quality ingredients and good service. You'll usually find Kevin cooking in the kitchen - especially at lunch time, but both he and Colleen make a point to visit with diners regularly, and often wait on guests themselves.
Some of the more popular items on the menu include the Honey Almond Salmon and a Broiled Seafood Platter featuring mussels, salmon, sea scallops and baked stuffed shrimp. Salad dressings are made in the kitchen, and Colleen's sought-after scone recipe remains a secret.
Reservations are suggested but not required for lunch and dinner. 108 South Churton St. Hillsborough, 27278. 919.732.2214. Lunch: Monday thru Friday 11:30am - 3pm, Saturday 11:30am - 2:30pm. Dinner: Tuesday thru Thursday 5pm - 9pm, Friday & Saturday 5pm - 9:30pm. Website. The Gulf Rim Cafe is located in historic Hillsborough at the old James Pharmacy since 2007. Serving authentic Creole, Caribbean and Cajun food and drinks, with an emphasis on fresh seafood, spicy seasonings, and local produce, Gulf Rim cuisine is renowned for its lively and inventive approach to everyday dining.
Gulf Rim Caf is open for Lunch, Dinner and Sunday Brunch. Mon-Sat 11:30-2:30, 5:00-9:00, Fri & Sat 5:00-10:00. Sun 11:00-2:00. 111 North Churton Street, Hillsborough phone 919.245.0040. Website |

TheBeltlineBuzz items are selected by our editors. No one can pay to be featured on TheBeltlineBuzz. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of TheBeltlineBuzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.
That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "TheBeltlineBuzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for. And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money.
We hope that you continue to enjoy your BeltlineBuzz. We look forward to delivering it. |
