Down Mexico Way - Cantina South Opens in Glenwood South

Ojo!  If your latest version of a Mexican escape is watching Lopez Tonight with a Corona Light, it's time to up the ante and andale over to Cantina South, the "Modern Mexican Kitchen and Bar" on Glenwood South.  Just Cantina South opened in the former Bogart's space, Cantina South is the collaboration of successful restaurateurs Kevin Summers (Michael Dean's, Twisted Fork) and  Bill Holt (Melting Pot, Snoopy's) along with Chef David Peraza (Mez, Jibarra menu consultant).  This new fire starter has something for everyone ... stylish, flavorful Mexican cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, an extensive list of tequilas (over 50) and signature margaritas.  Step inside the large, oak doors and get ready to enjoy the festive dining and high-energy late night experiences.

On a Mission: For those looking for an upscale alternative to Tex-Mex, Cantina South is the real deal. Chef Peraza's menus bring a modern twist to old-Mexico recipes with a focus on fresh flavors and distinctive combinations.  Each menu (lunch , brunch , dinner , and bar  Cantina South ) offers something for everyone and is ideal for sharing with friends.  Prices range from $10 to $20 for dinner entres and less for lunch/brunch. During our brunch visit (Sat & Sun) we sampled the Suizas Enchiladas, several varieties of Taquiza, and the Al Gusto Americano breakfast.  Each dish was mouth watering and presented beautifully.  No doubt this was the start of many return visits (dare we say pilgrimages?) to also try the dinner and lunch fare.

Tequila Cantina:  The temptations at Cantina South don't stop on the plate. The Tequila Lounge at Cantina South boasts over 50 tequilas and the bartending staff is ready to make one of their specialties - fresh Cantina South squeezed margaritas made with ripe nectars and premium tequilas.  Get your late-night juices flowing on the dance floor (Thursday - Saturday until 2am) with high energy spins from the DJ's.  Weekday specials include Skinny Margarita Thursday ($4 Skinny Margarita & Half Price Ceriche from 5pm - 7pm (Tequila Lounge & Patio only) and Cantina Partido Tuesday ($3 Tacos at Tequila Lounge & Patio; $3 Modela and Dos XX drafts & $4 Sangrias).  According to management, there are more specials to come so stay tuned.

Cantina South : 510 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh; Hours: Lunch (M-F: 11:30-2pm), Dinner (every day starting at 5pm and ending M-T 10pm, F-S 11pm, Sunday 9pm), Brunch (S-S: 11am - 2pm), and At The Bar (starting 11:30 am to close M-W 11pm, T-S 2am, Sunday 2pm - 9pm); Contact: 919-720-4778; Website

A Heartfelt Testimonial - "My mom lives with my family.  She's 84 and in a wheelchair.  She doesn't require a lot of care except that she's very busy, she goes out one to two times a day which, since she's in a wheelchair and her friends can't even Perpetual Home Care bring her home anymore, I have to do which makes me very busy!  My husband and I went away for two weeks and hired Perpetual Home Care to take my mother where she needed to go.  Since there was down time for the caregiver, she also helped out my daughter, who lives with us with her husband and 4 children, including a newborn!  My mom told me that if I should go away again on an extended trip, that I try to get the same caregiver to stay with her in my absence.  She was on time, cheerful, courteous, helpful, both to my mom and in the household.  While we were gone, my mom got sick and the caregiver came and rescued my mom in her hour of dismay at the library with the least possible fuss and then nursed her back to reasonable condition without losing her cool, which she considered to be quite an accomplishment. She even stayed with her for two nights to be sure she didn't get dehydrated or fall in her weakened state, which was above and beyond what we'd expected. My mom and family are very grateful for the care that they received from Perpetual Home Care."  Donna E.-Cary, NC

TheBeltlineBuzz items are selected by our editors.  No one can pay to be featured on TheBeltlineBuzz. That's what advertising is for, and it's always labeled as such. Selling ourselves (literally) would destroy the legitimacy, integrity, and fun of TheBeltlineBuzz. Plus, we'd never earn your trust that way. So we'll never make a dime off your meal at a restaurant nor a penny from the sale of the latest accessory we told you about.

That said, on occasion, we will send out "Dedicated" e-mails on behalf of sponsors. You'll recognize them from the subject line: "TheBeltlineBuzz Dedicated E-mail." Yes, these are paid for.  And, no, we would never sell our subscriber list to anyone. Not for any amount of money.

We hope that you continue to enjoy your BeltlineBuzz. We look forward to delivering it.
