Smell Away Your Stress
The winter holiday season is filled with powerful
smells--cooking, baking, pine needles, candles, a roaring fire... Our sense of
smell easily conjures memories of holidays past and the emotions that go with
them.
That's
because two of the places signals from your nose go to first in your brain are
your amygdala and hypothalamus, which moderate your emotional and physiologic
responses such as body temperature and
heart rate. They
also go to the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.
Because
of this connection, scent is a potent tool for changing your mood. Scent can relax you, stimulate your appetite, lift your
spirits, or calm you down.
So when you're stressed, make an herb sachet of chamomile,
rose, jasmine, and lavender to brew a relaxing tea or bath. Or turn to the smells
of nature to help you breathe deeply and soothe your stress away. Take a drive
by a beach or a walk near a golf course.
Dabbing pure essential oils on pulse points are a quick and
easy way of getting healing scents. Peppermint can relieve motion sickness;
eucalyptus alleviates congestion by opening nasal passages; and lavender
relieves headaches.
To
create a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere for others, burn a cinnamon or
cookie scented candle when party guests are on the way. Or to avoid lots of leftovers, stimulate their
appetite with the smell of chicken broth, celery seeds, freshly baked
bread, coriander, or bergamot.
So as you enjoy the last bit of 2009, don't forget to use the power of scent to take away your stress and heighten your experiences.

Open Up and Say "Ah"
Ilchi Lee has often written that energy is light, sound, and
vibration. Everything has energy, including humans. Energy of a healing nature
can help heal us when we come into contact with it. That's why many people are
using sound healing for managing their stress, emotional ups and downs, and
other ailments.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, many of
us try to remember its core values of peace and compassion. One simple exercise
of sound and vibration for your heart chakra can help generate and/or increase
this feeling and mindset in a simple, natural way:
With
your open palms, tap your chest rhythmically.- As you
tap, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth comfortably.
- Feel
the sensations in your chest caused by your breathing and your tapping.
- After
a minute, make an "Ah" sound while concentrating on your chest. Let the
sound come from your chest and clear any stagnant energy there. Make the
sound for as long as you can and then take a breath when you need to. Use
all of the air in your chest before you take in more.
- Continue
deeply saying "Ah" for at least a minute, but you can do it for longer if
it is comfortable for you.
This
quick exercise will relieve your stress, open your heart, and circulate more oxygenated
blood in your body. If you can feel the love in your heart while you do it, you
can take the exercise a step further and mentally send that love, compassion,
and peace to your friends, your family, your enemies, all the people of the
world, and even the earth.
